It's not certain, see my other posting on question, "Is PBC genetic".

I think what the medical field needs to do is to find out how to try to halt or eradicate certain conditions and diseases as opposed to finding out how they have been caused first. That way they could perhaps then find out how it came about afterwards.

My way of thinking at present is that it would of no real use to me to find out how I came about having PBC but how it could be halted before further damage is caused.

I think they look for the causes so that they can identify possible solutions. If it was an infection for example, that would take a particular kind of drug to get rid of what ever the causes the infection. If it's genetic, it might take a completely different kind of treatment - maybe controlling the damage rather than 'curing'.

Same with environmental - if its environmental, we'd have to avoid things maybe before they could treat the symptoms.

The bits I have read seem to say that it could be a combination of different factors - if that's right, I guess there will be more than one part to the cure

Of course, they might just accidentally discover a cure.. If they are going to have happy accidents like that, I wish they would hurry up.
