I have parietal cell antibodies and celiac disease. It seems some things are absorbred while others are not,and i'm concerned that i may also not be absorbing my folic acid tabs. Can anyone enlighten me on this dilemma?
Thanks

Hi Paul,
Having parietal cell antibodies means you could have problems with the acidety levels in your stomach acid, this could cause IF to not survive (wrong acidety) and therefore bad uptake of vit B12. Also a certain PH is needed for iron uptake etc. With having celiac I assume uptake of everything may be compromised, It would seem sensible to me to first have a vitamin and mineral profile done. Depending on that result it would give you reasons to add what may be needed..Folic acid is not that dificult to take up (not dependent on IF), natural form from foods are best, the artificial folic acid can stay unmetabolised in the body if taken to much, hence perscriptions are usually for 4 months only. Currently it is unknown what harm if any this unmetabolised folic acid does, but some research suggesting bad stuff. The best way to find out if you are taking up enough is to have a bloodtest testing serum folate,....its what I would do anyway..
I hope this helps,
Kind regards,
Marre.
Hi Paul,
Yes I now remember seeing your test results (I had an aminoacid plasma profile and vitamin profile done by the same lab, but the results were confusing, very different from yours, a lot of low aminoacids, low on all B vits), perhaps I should have answerred that you can try what ever you have, for 4 months, and then have bloods taken to see if you are taking it up, Seems the most logical way of trying to find out..
Kind regards,
Marre.
Thanks Marre, but i could never afford this test again.
Hi Paul,
Yes I know what you mean..I had my profiles done in 2007..am not going to repeat those tests either..arm and a leg. But perhaps just having serum folate tested at the surgery once a year could help?
Problem with doing private tests is that you are left with results that only mean more questions, I find..
Kind regards,
Marre
Serum folate atthe surgery every year would be useless, as the results always fall well in range.
