Hi,

I have been feeling really tired lately and had some bloods taken. The doctor said i am in range and dont need supplements but they look on the lower end. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I see on your Bio you have Crohns disease so a low VitD may also be causing problems. Good around 100 +

As Crohns is auto-immune it may be worth testing for auto-immune thyroid issues - Hashimotos - which can result in poor uptake of nutrients.

I was diagnosed with Crohns some 50 years ago and Hashimotos in 2005

B12 is good at 500+ - Folate and Ferritin good at mid-range - rather than bumping along the lower end !

As your Ferritin ( stored iron ) is low I suggest you request an Iron Profile testing. Low iron = low oxygen = fatigue...🌻

Yes you are at the lower end. It wouldn't hurt to take a supplement. Most Doctors don't know the difference between serum B12 and functional B12.

You want to have levels above 550 in any case to be normal.

As you have a bowel disorder that could be stopping absorbtion, I'd suggest you get injections and see if there's a difference.

Scientist, not medic.

Your results, whilst in range, are at the lower end. Supplements won't harm you, but be careful if you start dosing yourself with Iron as 'once it's in, it's harder to get rid of' whereas B12 & folate don't suffer that way. Excess iron isn't recommended.

Welcome to the forum.

I've assumed you're in UK.

I had severe b12 deficiency symptoms with most serum B12 results well within range.

See blog post below about being symptomatic for B12 deficiency with normal range serum B12.

I left detailed replies in the thread below which might be of interest.

Some links I post may have details that could be upsetting.

So I had low thyroid levels last year (still in range) my hair had started falling out and I was significantly more fatigued. I found research to say about increasing iodine to support a healthy thryroid funtion and my levels are now (in the range) at the top end and I don't have symptoms anymore. Suffice to say having some suppliments might help, take them and see if your symptoms improve. If they don't go for further investigation. (watch out for supplementation near blood tests as could give a false positive)
