High ferratin levels
Ferritin can rise with inflammation in the body. One reason
I think more of a problem giving symptoms if it drops significantly .
If full bloods done you should get an explanation or note from your doctor if any concerns .
If concerned about your results book a telephone consult.
I did this
Hello Nackapan, As I often note your helpful and reliable comments to so many people I hope you are able to give me advice following blood test results that a Haematologist appears to have ignored, leaving me confused. Majority of iron studies results are reasonable except my serum iron level is 10umol/L (9-30), serum ferritin is 350ug/L (30-250) following an iron infusion a year ago and transferrin saturation index 19% (15-50). As I went to Haematologist to discuss return of my iron deficiency symptoms and was emailed with comment that no action needed I do not understand. My GP is not happy to comment.
An ultrasound scan confirmed that I do not have a fatty liver problem. I noted your comment that ferritin can rise as a result of inflammation. I have PA, hypothyroidism, bile acid malabsorption and so inflammation would be no surprise. I want to know if I can re-start iron tablets safely because I do not understand the role of ferritin in relation to iron levels. Many thanks.
As I understand it ferritin is a protein store of iron . If this depletes its an indication that heam iron will will follow.
Therecare specific symptoms if ferritin is low .
Breathless
Calf pain
Restless legs
To name a few .
You know how you feel.
I had the same confusion.
I booked a gp appt.
It was a phone call.
From that call I kept taking my iron tablets.
Ask s direct question about what to take.
Iron is tricky and they should advise you.
Also a repeat blood test should be offered in 3-4 months.
Thank you so much for your reply. I have had restless legs and very variable sleep quality. I am planning to get another set of blood tests done next month to compare iron levels again and will take it from there. My GP will hopefully clarify further with a more knowledgeable hospital Consultant if necessary. I do feel as if I need more iron. Many thanks and I'll keep you informed if I am able to clarify further. Best wishes.
Some of your symptoms could also be to do with vitamin B6 or E being low. Even though you don't have fatty liver, B6, B9 and B12 work to clear homocysteine in the liver. As you have got enough B12 and your body's been busy clearing the crap, your B6 stores could be depleted. B6 is in many foods, but at low levels. E is in oils, nuts and oily fish.
What strikes me about all this is different gene types are probably manifesting B12 deficiency differently.
All I know is too much iron can be toxic, as well as constipating! So gently does it.
Big hugs.
