Which Folate supplement is best?

Having watched Dr. David Morris 's video, he said Folic acid supplements aren't so good. So what's the best thing to get ? I do eat a fair amount of green veg, I'm no longer a Marmite addict, I occasionally buy liver paté. But I'd like to be sure I'm getting enough.

I saw the video and emailed the people at Cytoplan who did the video to ask exactly the same question. As he doesn’t elaborate on why he doesn’t like folic acid, but they haven’t given me an answer. They just said they would pass on my email to him.

It was so annoying, I'd just stocked up on a bulk buy from Holland and Barrett!

Hi Oneash, just a heads up regarding unopened Holland aand Barrett purchases. They were very obliging when I returned tablets I had bought by mistake eveeven though I didn't have the necessary receipt.

I took folic acid 400mcg and soon dropped to 200mcg as my folate level top of range .

I don't want to take too much. But I do seem to notice a difference if I take it.

I’m also on a very small dose, 500mcg and that’s being well tolerated.

My folate was 31 when originally tested 6 months ago and I get an updated test result next week so I’ll be interested to see what it is now.

I use Metabolics Methyltetrahydrofolate liquid, which suits me well.

Folic Acid supplements are fine in moderate doses like 400mcg. If you plan on taking a lot more than that (hopefully there is some good reasoning for that), then for a number of reasons, Methylfolate or Folinic Acid might be better options. Methylfolate is easier to find, there are not that many sources for folinic acid.

Yes, that's what I've been taking, 400mcg folic acid when I haven't obviously had a dietary source.

Unless your diet is highly unusual, there will be some folate in it. Now, whether adequate amounts will be absorbed is another thing since lack of adequate stomach acid due to PA may challenge absorption. A blood test should help indicate whether you are absorbing enough.

But 400mcg is a safe dose and nothing to be concerned about.
