So I’ve previously had blood in urine, and urination issues non stop since that time. Approximately 3-4 years ago. I was peeing loads and had sensitive bladder. I had the Cystoscope (worst experience of my life). And mri scans as well as ultrasound. They all found nothing. I was discharged despite no diagnosis. And left to it.
Skip forwards to February with the same issues of constant weeing and I was told by that gp my B12 was really low. I got given 6 B12 injections and the first time in my life all my symptoms disappeared.
6 weeks later symptoms arrived again. It took 2 weeks of nagging the gps to give me B12 again. Again it worked but in week 2 my partner and I got exceedingly sick with flu. My symptoms returned super quick.
I then started self injecting and after a week was significantly better but now I’ve completely relapsed. Peeing loads very emotional. Seriously depressed. Bladder is killing me. So again saw another gp it’s roulette who you get at my practice and yep there’s blood in my urine. She basically said without saying it could be cancer. And she wants to retest me in a fortnight and if bloods there I will again be re referred back to urology again.
Has anyone with B12 deficiency who had frequent urination found they also had blood in urine if dipstick tested?
I can find people have posted with all these symptoms and b12 but no mention of blood.
I am seriously scared now. The symptoms can be so many things, from B12 to prostate cancer, although all the latter I have previously been tested for and Dr Klein did say I have pernicious anaemia.
I just want peoples thoughts.
Very low.

Sorry to read that you are having a difficult time. The signs and symptoms of PA/B12D can be vast and can play absolute havoc with emotional health. We can be exhausted and our cognitive function can be out of whack especially if we are back and for the toilet.
Now, unfortunately, both you and your partner caught the flu. This can upset the apple cart to recovery with PA/B12D. Another problem can be when we start to recover, we run before we can walk and undertake far too much. Often, emotionally the Relapses can be more difficult to manage. We can become sensitive, tearful, moody, misunderstandings can occur simply because we feel so flaming awful.
Many of us report bladder problems, from frequency, lack of sensation, pain, incomplete voiding, up in the night, hesitation - so you are in another room, get to the bathroom then cannot go. Lots of different combinations.
The blood in the urine is via a dipstick test and so is a trace. Your GP is monitoring the situation and explained what will happen either way. They will re-test in 2 weeks. In the meantime, your job is to get better. By this, a good Plan is :-
i) Allow self to be tired, use toilet as and when required.
ii) Drink fluids, eat well and enjoy a couple/lots of favourite movies or Euros 2024.
iii) Be rather lazy, when your partner goes to work, tip them a wink, tell them have a good day and lounge on your sofa or bed for hours.
v) Daydream, if you can, or remember great holidays you have had.
iv) I generally advise a multivitamin/mineral as well especially after the flu because it is a virus and 70 % of our immune system is in our gut. For about 4 weeks.
I know you feel absolutely hideous. The reversing out process can be painful especially for those severely deficient and for a long time. On a personal note, the day after my 11th injection, it felt like somebody had smashed a TV over my head (not that they ever have) but tremendous painful static and if I moved it then it made me rather vomitus maximus.
Write a little handwritten note to your partner and hide it in the coat she always wears or handbag she uses most, Thanks for always being there for me.
This is a journey Gobbo, there are twists and turns but we see it through.
Thanks for the reply. It feels really lonely experience. I feel v restless despite fatigue I’ve done over 10k steps through my constant pacing. I am terrified of getting a cancer diagnosis and just hope this is still B12 related. Feeling really upset.
Bless you Gobbozoid, I have PA and I had so much one time I was terrified but it was from a UTI and cleared with a round of antibiotics. I pray all is well with you and that GOD camp HIS loving Angels around you. Best!
Not entirely sure about the dipsticks as these can trace a small amount blood and can set your mind running, I was hospitalised recently and had a large amount of blood in my urine, also had blood tests as well, I'm also having B12 deficiency issues, but receive the 3 monthly injections, I have had a couple kidney stones and this caused an infection, obviously with careful monitoring I'm sure you'll be causing your mind to run riot, try not to worry as for having a problem passing urine or any stinging sensations I was told to pass urine with a warm shower over your private parts it certainly helps, best of luck !
That is not always the case with a dip stick test.
My daughter had a recent UTI but nothing showed in her urine when dip tested. Her Dr sent her urine to the lab to look for growth which showed she had E.coli possibly caught from when she had a recent colonoscopy for blood in her faeces. It turned out some tablets she were taking had irritated her bowel and made her bleed.
Do you have a diagnosis of PA, if you do why were your injections given so sporadic ? I cant understand why you had to nag them for injections if you have a PA diagnosis ! Or is your Gp as ignorant as most and not treating your condition correctly ?
You have had tests which have shown no cancer. It seems the B12 injections are the key to your problem, as you report symptoms have improved with injections. How often are you injecting and have you tried doing them more frequently ? I need to inject every day for example. Any illness such as flu will set you back, so it's always wise to step your B12 regime up at such times.
The anxiety, depression are all part of the low B12. I suffered with it too. We had a gentle man only the other day post of his anxiety and urinary issues. Try not to worry, easier said than done I know, but it does seem it could be related to your B12. Remember to take your other important vitamins along side of your B12, such as folate, vit D, iron, B1, B6, K2 ect or just get a really good vitamin supplement.
Now take deep breaths, try to relax and wait to see what the next test shows. Many of us have damaged nerves caused by lack or late treatment, this in turn affects nerves in all areas even our bladders and bowels.
P.s you are not alone there are many of us with similar symptoms. 🤗
I've been through exactly what you're going through. It's a painful experience. Bupa did all tests and found nothing. I did some research and found that certain acidic foods and stress can trigger it. Once, I had an aloe vera drink at a Chinese restaurant that was infused with sugar, flavorings, and additives, which triggered a terrible, painful episode the next day. Another time, I ate out and had lots of sugary foods, including a processed lasagne from Cook with lots of artificial additives and felt mentally drained from personal relationship which triggered it again. I believe mine is due to a sensitive bladder that gets raw, red, and bleeds. It's known as interstitial cystitis. Hope that helps..try keeping a food diary and always drink plenty of water!
Funnily enough before this latest bout started, I had a cocktail I wouldn’t normally drink, Long Island ice tea. My bladder felt a bit sensitive before that but after it was hell. It has an orange liqueur in it so may be acidic.
I drank 3 litres of water to flush it out. Chamomile tea with manuka honey (15+ MGO) helped as well as olive leaf extract liquid and garlic tablets. I used deep breathing/meditation and yoga to settle and relax the bladder.
hi I’ve got an over active and under active bladder and bowel . I get UTIs a lot and it’s horrendous . I get blood sometimes but the worst bit is not being able to empty my bladder for up to 7-8 hours. Am continuously up A&E . When I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency I lost my memory for 6 months and the diagnosis with FND and a year later FCD. I’ve had bladder issues since having B12 issues now I’m going to urology and neurologist as the incontinece team can’t do any more. They have given me tena lady pull ups which I was buying the cheap Aldi ones before as I could afford anything else but they are saying it neurological. Hope that helps a bit I’ve been like this for 4 years now. I was also tested for cancer and came back clear. I’m on B12 injections every 2 months but they are trying to take that away from me I sat in the nurses room and they came back because she knew I was not right and gave me the jab otherwise another 4 weeks I would’ve been waiting
I am no expert but have you tried injecting every other day? That’s what I’ve just started doing. I know IC can be linked to low b12 and mine was 130 at its lowest. But I’ve been self injecting two weeks now so shocked I’ve had this episode.
Another reply suggested something I ate or drank may have caused such a sudden onset and I did have a cocktail the day before Long Island ice tea which has orange and lemon in it so I wonder if my bladder lining went No!
It’s a real pain. Thing is as I am male they keep saying it’s unlikely an infection etc anyway. Apparently woman get them way more than men.
I started B12 injections two weeks ago EOD, plus folic EOD, and last weekend I developed a UTI. First thing was I felt a strange sensation when I peed, then next day there was blood in my urine. I was surprised how much! But the next day the blood had subsided, but I did a dipstick test strip and it was indicating there was still blood in my urine. I contacted my surgery and got 3 days of antibiotics (nitrofurantoin). Didn’t start them until Wednesday as I thought it had cleared up, but it hadn’t. Finished the course last night, so hoping it’s gone. But Ive never had bladder problems in the past and never a UTI. I wondered whether it was all connected. But I may never know. I am going to start having D Mannose, which is apparently good for preventing further infections. It is a natural remedy which includes cranberry. So hoping this will keep any further infections at bay. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Nitro isn't usually recommended for people with nerve issues. I found this out on this site after I had been on it for a month for embedded biofilm UTIs. I highly doubt three days will cause issues though. But someone shared this here and it was really helpful to me. I had no idea that certain meds aren't indicated for those of us that have nerve issues. Good luck!
Yes, second Gobbozoid. I would try daily injections. The only time I haven't suffered with overactive bladder much is when I was on 5,000mcg per day injections of Hydroxocobalamin.
I'm under the care of a urogynocolgist for bladder issues. She recently told me that keytones, protein in urine, and blood can all indicate UTI. Blood in urine can certainly be a UTI even with a clear dipstick test and urine culture. It's good to see a urologist though and maybe they can help you further. Research biofilms in bladder. Look at the website live uti free. Biofilms can cause recurrent UTIs. Try not to worry. D mannose only helps with gram negative/positive bacteria. I can't remember which it is. I'm sorry you are dealing with these issues. I have had a similar journey and am getting better and better as time goes by.
I have several issues- IC (intercistial cystitis) and likely adenomyosis. I worked with a urologist to clear biofilms and bacteria in the bladder. Long term antibiotics and biofilm disrupters. The bladder pain and frequency is much better after this treatment. Look up Ruth Kriz on your tube and her info on this. Good luck!
I’m so sorry you feel so poorly and low. I really wish you well again.
I have pernicious anaemia and know how hard it is too cope.
I also have bladder problems but no blood. I keep getting what I thought was recurring UTI’s until a nurse said it could be vaginitis which is inflammation. I was recommended to use Replens and Yes which really help.
Your doctor can also give you estrogen cream to help too. Hope this helps. X
