Information about frequency of injection

Hi

I posted about a sudden deterioration in my health after 4 years of successful self-injection eod, daily or twice a week (depending on how I was doing). My last post questioned whether it was due to a bad batch of B12 depot - unfortunately, using newly ordered B12 doesn't seem to be making an improvement.

I had an appointment with a nurse yesterday as blood tests showed that I was pre-diabetic. At it I honestly answered that I use B12 every other day (well, I didn't mention sometimes more - so not quite so honest but I thought eod would be more accepted because of loading doses). I've had a call and now have an appointment to see a GP tomorrow - I did want an appointment about my symptoms but rather suspect it's been rushed because of concerns about 'over' supplementing.

This is a rushed post as I'm out this evening. Are there any helpful documents/research to help me explain why eod self-injecting B12 is a good idea for some of us. I'm expecting an interrogation!

I am struggling with fatigue, pins and needles, numb feet and tinnitus in particular. This seems to have come on suddenly - going from feeling I was in really good health to feeling unwell. I am used to some variation and altering my doses appropriately but I am feeling concerned about the change in my health so want to go ahead with the appointment.

Thanks all.

hello, this is rushed to bare bones but should help.

Be calm and confident. Its half the battle 🙂.

The appointment may well be about being pre-diabetic, which if type two can be reversed with diet. Should they want to prescribe (unlikely), say you need time to process the information.

If challenged about s.i.: Thank them for their concern, but you are only injecting as your symptoms dictate and according to NICE guidelines.

You are s.i. to avoid (hopefully) permanent damage that will happen if proper treatment is not received quickly and frequently enough. This has been documented.

B12 is a water based vitamin which has been shown to have no harmful effects even at very high levels. Any excess is removed in bodily waste. It is used in mega doses for smoke inhalation ie cyanide poisoning. (Again documented).

That You will be able to send them supporting documentation should they require it.

(PAS has a section for health professionals).

Hope this helps. that all goes well tomorrow.

Best wishes x

.

Back home. Thanks for this - what sound advice, just what I needed to hear. Yes, of course, it's in line with NICE guidelines - but I hadn't thought about it in that way or to put it across like that. And, deep breaths and be confident about the steps I've taken - I seem to crumble when I expect to be challenged on my health decisions. Many thanks.

How did your appointment go?

Thanks for asking. On the plus side GP listened, did physical tests and is sending me for more blood tests. She’s also contacting neurology about ‘stocking glove’ neuropathy and asking for advice. However, she said the practice will have to decide whether to stop my B12 monthly prescription because I could be doing harm SI eod. Also problems could be too much B12 or B12 toxicity. Can that be right?!

I’m left feeling that my symptoms seem like B12 deficiency but I’m injecting daily and it’s not working. I don’t know what would cause this change after 4 years of good health.

I researched what the Mayo Clinic in the US says about B-12 toxicity, and seems like they say that you could get pins and needles from too much B-12. Reminds me of type 2 diabetes. Fatigue is a symptom of both low blood sugar and also high blood sugar levels. I'm dealing with this, as well as the B-12 issues.

Study up on glycemic index of the food you eat. Eat low GLI foods. Learn how to eat like a diabetic, balance your carbs and sweet vegetables with plenty of protein and fiber. It's a challenge, but this helps my energy levels. I saw a dietitian a few years ago and they acted like they never heard of glycemic index. They only wanted to talk about serving sizes. But not all carbs are equal. Good luck!

Thanks- it’s helpful to get other people’s insight and suggestions. I’m going to have a go cutting back on B12 but not sure why it would change after working so well - worth a try. Saying this I feel I get some reprieve in the morning not long after injecting. My diet is good in just the ways you say. Always learning on this B12 journey!
