Reaction to B12 injection?

I have B12 jabs every 4 months, usually PA neuropathy flares up when it's due but this time it didn't. I felt ill about an hour after the jab, severely dizzy, bit of a headache. I'm not sure if this is a sign I've had more B12 than I need? I'm a bit scared to run it by the GP as one time they stopped the jabs altogether and my PA symptoms worsened significantly.

Sorry to read,

Have a lie down. Sip a pint of water and see how you are in 2 to 3 hours. Always know when to ring your doctor or get proper medical help. I noted your Medical History.

Hope you do feel better soon.

I woukd take note of the Brand used of b12 hydroxcobalamin. The additives can be different.

4 monthly maybe too long a gap for you??

Try and keep still .

I find yoghurt helps for some reason .

Pain killers for headaches also suppress nervous system/ receptors.

Hope it's transient for you.

Generally, 4 months is too long a gap and your body is telling you. I think the best is to take a shot when your body tells you. There are multiple reasons why we may deplete B12 faster or slower. Two things that I know: cold weather needs less B12 and hot and humid weather needs more, and higher thyroid hormones increase the body metabolism and require a higher B12 level. Since we can't predict many things, just go by what your body tells you. Self-inject if your doctor won't give. Good luck!

hello, no I wouldn't tell gp or nurses they mainly do not know about b12d/p.a. and would stop injections.

Ive looked at previous posts and headaches, dizziness, extreme tiredness and sleeping is quite a common reaction to B12.

I experienced it initially with loading injections, also when I increased the frequency of s.i.

From this I think that you may be under treated and you are reacting to B12. Many of us go through a period of healing when we feel much worse.

I do not know your symptoms, but 4 months is a long time to wait between injections, Depending on you symptoms, I would s.i. appropriately.

Best wishes x

You could try to eat something rich in potassium, like dates, because when the body starts using the extra b12 it needs extra of other nutrients, like potassium. Iron and folate may also drop a bit (temporarily) because the body uses a bit more of these with the b12. So any borderline deficiency in some other nutrient may temporarily get a bit worse when a b12-deficient person is treated with b12.

So it doesn't have to be the b12 itself that caused the reaction. B12 can't work on its own but needs other nutrients to do its work. Make sure to eat well and maybe take a multivitamin. For potassium though it's best to simply eat some potassium rich food.

Thank you, I was wondering if it might be a potassium issue I've had a deficiency once when in hospital and with having palpitations I wonder if it's lower than it should be

I think it is more likely you have has too little B12 and not too much. Lots of people have daily injections. For cyanide poisoning, 5 g of hydroxocobalamin is administered intravenously over 10 minutes to neutralize a lethal dose of cyanide in adults.
