Eye problems

Ok So, I woke up this morning with a fairly large posey-shaped vitreous floater along with a flashing light that darts across the same eye when I move my head suddenly or am in the dark. Has anyone experienced this and could it be b12 def related? I'm a bit concerned it may get worse. I haven't hurt it with anything. Thanks!

I had something similar but following a head injury, not B12 related. I had it checked at the opticians and it was nothing to worry about and faded away over time. Might be good to get it checked for peace of mind.

Make an appointment at the opticians ASAP

sounds like posterior vitreous detachment, especially with the flashing light thing. I had this last year, happened suddenly - massive floaty floater and the flashing lights at the periphery of my vision. You need to see an optician urgently in case it's a detached retina, but it's very easy to get diagnosed. If it's pvd, which it probably is, it's just a case of waiting for your brain to ignore the floater, and then the lights will reduce in intensity in a few weeks. Having said that if I'm driving in the dark and I need to look left or right at a junction, i still get the odd sparky thing, but knowing what it is makes it a lot less stressful!

I agree, should be seen urgently in case it is torn retina.

Sorry to read brenanddave,

Yes, check up with opticians. Blood pressure maybe worth a check too. Just to exclude as well.

I would advise going to your local A&E, or a good optician asap. Might be the vitreous jelly stuff that's come loose (I have this), but I was advised by my optician that if it was accompanied by lights that should be looked at immediately, as it could indicate a retinal detachment. This is serious, but fixable if treated quickly.I don't wish to worry you unduly, but again would advise getting checked out asap by an expert. Let us know how you get on. 🤗

I had the same. It is not B12 related. I went to an eye doc not an optician and she said it was vitreous gel detachment. It is normal as we age especially if you are short sighted. No retinal detachment and she said my brain would not notice the floaters soon. She suggested a follow up in ten months. It is a lot less worrying/stressful knowing this so it is worth having it checked.

Anything eye is disconcerting. Suggest first port of call an optician if you have one. If not, your nearest hospital eye casualty dept.

I had this earlier this year. The g.p.sent me to eye casualty. I was told it was to do with the gel in the eye becoming more liquidy with age. They checked in case of retinal detachment and gave me a follow up check. They said my brain would get used to the flashes. I don't notice them now. They said to return if there are ever bad floaters in case of retinal detachment.

Thank you everyone for your care and support. I have had my eyes checked and the scan showed the floater was attached to my optic nerve The optician is confident it is not pulling on the retina so unless I start seeing more flashes or I start seeing a dark shadow over my eye I should see it improving over the next months. He checked my other eye and said that I would experience the same thing within the next 6 months. from what he could see. He has taken photos to compare if it does deteriorate.xx

Yes this happened to me; along with tingling sensation; fatigue; backpains; shortness of breath ; neck pains and was forgetful

my situation improved by using high dosage of B12 or the use of sublingual methlycobalamin;

hope this helps; my journey took me months to research hope this comment helps

Best to get it checked just in case.

I had something that sounds the same - halo of flashing light. Like you I wondered if I should be worried and queried it with doctors surgery. Normally our doctors show a complete lack of interest. Not this time! Arranged for me to go to hospital where I saw an eye doctor within the hour. I was by now about 8pm! Apparently the concern is that it can be the start of a detached retina.

It went away so everything ok but they warned me what to look out for if retina starts to detach.

Get it checked out immediately
