recent bloods advice please newby

Hello. We recently tested my sons bloods he has hashimoto, takes Levo. However recent bloods have flagged up a B12 deficiency

B12 34.5……Range 37.5-188.

He will make an appointment with his Gp but any advice would be greatly appreciated. The wonderful admins on the thyroid group suggested it Could be pernicious anaemia, as most folks usually have more than 1 autoimmune disorder.

I woukd ask fof an IFAB ( Intrinsic factor antibody)blood test .It picked up around 50% of those with PA .

This is the preferred test and should be done before b12 injections start.

Also folate normally tested at the same time as B12 as well

as is an iron panel.

What measurement was used ?

Serum b12 tests usually have higher numbers .

I.e

pg/mL range 200-914 pg/mL

If folate low get b12 treated first .

Hoping he has a past test result too.

Is he eating a rich b12 diet?

Useful to point thus out with Gp what he eats .

My deficiency was put down as dietary.

It clearly wasn't!!

Or due to any meds.

As I wasn't on any.

Does he have b12 deficiency symptoms ?

Hopefully not and caught early

It was an active b12 test through medichecks. I don’t have it to hand at the minute to check the measurements used.

I will push for a IFAB blood test. He has been at uni and although he knows how to cook and has good nutritional knowledge, he may well have been lapse with his diet. However the RDA is only 2.4ug/day it’s not hard to achieve.

Depends on his ability to absorb.Also how he eats .

Alcohol also inhibits absorbtion as well as common medicines.

My husbands was low . He is diabetic .

Type one

He just needs a daily b12 tablet .

His Gp may well want to do their own NHS testing as usually can't treat otherwise

Hoping he is taking his health into his own hands and has a good student health centre .

You don't mention symptoms .

Hope it's caught early before symptoms.

It needs attention.

Of course yes, I had forgotten about absorbing nutrients from foods, and with hashimoto low stomach acid can be an issue! Mmm alcohol that’s interesting I didn’t know it had that affect.

He’s had much to contend with in his short life regarding his health, as a mum it hurts.

His symptoms, when he came home in the summer from uni he said he felt very tired, but it wasn’t relieved with sleep. Hence the testing of thyroid and co factors! I’ve asked him to take a look at b12 symptoms see if any apply.

My daughter poorly at uni .Difficult.

B12 definitely needs treating with oral b12 or injections

but get the tests done first if possible otherwise will affect/ scew results.

Especially if gp wants NHS testing.

B12 and folate are done together at the lab.

Hopefully with the test result he has got will persuade gp to do IFAB test with his medical history .
