Should we lobby for modern healthcare to be a blend of Conventional Medicine AND Functional Medicine?

This is my question of the day...

We are all suffering, horribly. From ignorance, mainly.

Sorry to point it out...

Management of B12, of gut health, of everything that happens to a body from a deficiency relies on the study of functional medicine. It is not the domain of conventional medicine, e.g. the NHS and never will be.

So where does someone with B12 deficiency sit in all this? It still makes people anemic, right? That's a blood disease that can be fatal. So it must be picked up by conventional medicine.

The problem?

They don't know what to do after a couple of jabs.

So, B12 is potentially an anomaly in this case, isn't it? Which other vitamins have the power to devastate the body in this way? I'm not sure I know of one that carries the same magnitude.

So, no-one should expect to EVER get sufficient support, proper healthcare, or even a vague understanding of what we're going through if modern medicine is overlooking nutrition, something which sits under the remit of Functional Medicine.

So what is the solution?

The NHS has to offer a blend of functional and conventional medicine for everyone, free at the point of service. Or, at least a referral to a functional doctor.

I really can't see any other way to make this better for us all.

No arguments from me. I'm a great believer in functional medicine. Which is why I used diet and exercise not drugs to reverse my diabetes type 2.

An excellent resumé of our dilemma Pickle500 ! But I’m afraid that nothing will be done .The Pharmacological Industry has too great a hold and a massive influence on all things medical . Nothing will happen unless it is in their interests .

I did see a Homeopathic Hospital in Bristol once .That was partially funded and worked with the NHS.

Some of the NHS dieticians have extensive training in nutrition .

Very, very interesting. I so agree. Being on the PA journey is a massive learning process about health and modern pharmaceutical medicine and it's profound inadequacies.

Hi Pickle

Absolutely, 100% agree but I would go further. Our NHS approach and GP training is based on outdated and antiquated medical perspectives without doubt.

But how to change?? The whole industry and medical education system is propped up by money from Big Pharma who profit from our current “treat” rather than “prevent” premise. I didn’t use the word “cure” because curing people is actually rarely heard of, as again it’s not a profitable approach unless it involves lots of drugs.

The barrier to change is that Big Pharma and our current approach to healthcare are the unseen bedrocks of our society - for example, our pension companies invest in these companies so we can enjoy financial growth in our pension pots - so huge long term ramifications for us all to get meaningful change. Not too dissimilar to the domination of fossil fuel companies in society.

I have had private healthcare for many years through my work and I am battling at present to allow me to consult a functional, holistic health practitioner- this is being resisted in preference for the more traditional approach. Meanwhile I learn from this forum best I can.

So in a nutshell - absolutely set on the same destination as you but cannot see a route to achieving the change we need - even assuming their was a will to do so.

I felt like I was dying in the hands of the NHS so myself I follow the root cause protocol. Which has been an eye opener. It has been a revelation and miraculous. So functional is a great addition alongside using testing.

Not the NHS service that you advocate, but there is an FM doctor I know who used to be a GP. She trained and qualified as an FM doctor due to experiencing illness that was not being addressed by the NHS system.
