hi

How is everyone? Just want to know if having b12 affects your muscle tone, the reason I’m asking is that lately my inner thigh muscles are like jelly , I’m always on my feet at work and I don’t sit down as I’m not a lazy person, when I saw this I was quite concerned, can anyone relate to this , thanks

B12 deficiency can cause muscle weakeness.

Not aware of any way in which B12 would affect muscle tone.

Hi PrettywomanI completely lost the muscles i had built! I had been very active and then become very ill with an infection. it was then that PA was diagnosed. With a bloods result of 76 it took me a long tume to begin to recover. Maybe it was this prolonged period of inactivity or the PA directly that caused the muscke loss and weakness I dont know but Ive never been able to rebuild it despite becoming more active again on 3 weekly jabs.

Im just learning to live with it but feel Ive got old before my time.

Good luck and work whatever muscles you have.

I 'deconditioned ' at first as very ill and bedbound.Do specific exercises to rebuild muscle tone.

I got a resistant exercise band to do a few leg exercises every day.

Just above knees sitting on a chair .

Pysio said walking exercises but doesn't strengthen??

I think with me it happened as I had a rapid weight loss .

All back on now !

I was really disappointed to find that I had lost my muscles to B12 deficiency.

First time I really noticed this was when I was, by mid-afternoon, struggling to push open swing-back fire doors in the corridors at work. Bit humiliating for a carpentry and joinery teacher.

This muscle loss is, I believe, the cause of joint pain and discomfort, particularly at night. Can't have one knee resting on the other, or one arm resting on the other - with no muscles there, that's way too much accumulating pressure on bones. So I have to sleep in a "car-crash dummy" position !

I couldn't seem to flex muscles even - calves particularly. Like I'd forgotten how. This could have some relationship to the numbness and tingling in my outer shins but no idea what. Luckily, I never lost feeling in my feet, which can make walking very difficult for some here.

I have had improvements - I can still remember that changing a lightbulb would make my arms shake, decorating the christmas tree would take two days (and a lot of tea-breaks), and standing up in the kitchen to make dinner/ wash up would make my legs shake.

None of that happens now.

Nackapan is right : although I could not stand at a bus-stop without support, I could still walk for miles- but that did not help at all with muscles. Very good for my osteoporosis of the spine though .

Glad to hear that you are still working - it isn't easy, is it ? A condition that affects your energy levels but can be quite invisible to others isn't easy to explain and does not always evoke sympathy in colleagues.

Keep going and improvements will gradually happen - no overnight miracles for most of us !

hi Cheryl Claire

Thanks for the reply, it’s like you say I can’t sleep well at all because I have to keep changing my positions aswell, but I just noticed my inner thigh muscles just sort of like jelly which I was a little concerned about, I can walk but sometimes my legs really hurt or ache and like you say standing just doing normal things can be a task, but I have to work to earn money and even though I ache I persevere, it’s just good to know I’m not on my own and I’m glad you are doing well as it sounds like you have been through a lot , again Thankyou for replying it means so much not just from you replying but everyone else that does aswell

More to be gained - you aren't done yet !

It can get better but for some takes longer than perhaps anyone would expect. Don't give up on former self too quickly.

I have reduced symptoms and now know what is necessary for me to keep it that way. I have also managed to reduce osteoporosis to osteopenia - was not even aware that that was a possibility. I ran, for the first time in many years, without getting a lack-of-shock-absorbers jarring to stop me - chasing my partner's little grandaughter downhill !

Never on your own here. There is always someone around with advice and support. It really helps when you are overwhelmed, confused or anxious.

Sounds just like me, from the thigh wastage to the painful sleeping positions. My family say it’s age related, but if that was the case surely it would have happened slowly and not within a year 🤔

Just within five months I lost my muscle strength and muscle tone. For about ten months I could even barely sleep because of back muscle weakness. Because of severe muscle weakness two upper spine bones shifted and MRI showed spine degeneration. My stomach muscles got so weak and couldn't keep belly button in its place and suddenly bulged and caused hernia. I couldn't carry any objects by hands. All these happened just in five months. But jabbing at the beginning started to even worsening my symptoms but by some unwanted exercise (carrying my dad on hourly basis due to his broken hip) my muscles are getting their strength back gradually. Still when I wake up in the morning my shirt is soggy due to excessive sweat since my upper torso muscles are still weak and I have struggle to move them repeatedly as it happens during sleep. I think I have passed tipping point in journey of healing process and I feel healing is getting accelerated because my right thigh was weak so bad along with my back but now my thigh muscle weakness is fading away. My eyesight changes was also so weird since in red light I have multi vision but getting improved. I had bad pressure on my eyes but getting improved.

I can completely understand how you feel about muscles being jelly. For me it was a mixture of menopause and PA which left it hard to do much without muscles turning to jelly and having to stop and rest.

Over the last couple of years I have increased the amount of times I SI so I have enough energy .not much though ..and plucked up the courage to join a gym.

I only do strength training exercises, no cardio. I was very fortunate as the trainer at the gym has undiagnosed b12 deficiency and SI.

He completely gets it and we treat it more like a rehab or physio therapy session. He checks on energy levels and I never go to the max ..as he would normally push others to as the recovery period is hugely extended. It can take days if I push too hard. As it is I need a quiet day afterwards.

After checking on nutrition he also recommends that overall I needed to up my protein intake especially immediately after exercise. Protein helps the muscles repair and build. Do I sound like body builder…I definitely am not or want to be … but it is the same principle…..

AND it is working. I have greatly reduced nagging hip and back pains, arms don’t trouble me when hanging the washing on the line, and I have progressed slowly and my chiropractor has seen huge improvements.

I still get jelly legs or arms if I have over done it but now learning when to stop.

Worth a try … just timetable recovery as well as gym time

Good luck

Hi, due to being unable to walk or exercise due to my B12 deficiency, I lost a lot of muscle strength. Basically 2 years with no exercise!

Anyways, i bought a vibration plate and do 15 mins a day … you can exercise or just stand on it and I have noticed improvement. There’s lots of YouTube’s that you can check out. Best wishes
