For the last 10 days or so I've had a tickly cough, which turned into a chesty cough. I did a few Lateral flows, which were negative. I'm sitting on the sofa thinking why do I feel so B12ish? Its only a cough!
Daughter has Cystic Fibrosis and went downhill very quickly and ended up in hospital with an awful chest. While in there, she had a courtesy Covid test - positive, despite negative LFTs at home. No wonder my PA has me on the sofa, which is very unusual for me, so a few more jabs of 'red bull' will undoubtedly be needed during recovery.
Thankfully, daughter is on the mend thanks to a course of I.V antibiotics and the ministrations of the physioterrorists. But we can't visit as we are all unclean!
Just goes to show how accurate, or not, lateral flow tests are !

Although I don't really understand why, I (and others) experience worsened B12 deficiency symptoms when sick, but especially with COVID. There are several papers that suggest that COVID attacks methylation, impairing supply of methyl donors and increasing demand. Another theory is that Glutathione, the body's most important antioxidant, is redirected to fighting off the cold/flu which ends up impacting B12 because Glutathione is required to transform B12 into its active forms. I hope we will see further interesting research on it as there's definitely something going on there.
Relevant paper quote:
"Intracellular reduction of the central cobalt atom is essential for the formation of the metabolically active forms of B12. This process requires reduced glutathione and the hydroquinone form of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH2), it is therefore compromised by oxidative stress" academic.oup.com/qjmed/arti....
Yes, as you say there is definitely something going on. The last time that I had Covid I needed to take extra jabs, as I felt that the B12 was being eaten up far more quickly. Standard coughs and colds just don't seem to have the same detrimental effect on my levels.
I'm going to go for a gentle walk in the hills this afternoon to see if the fresh air will blow away some of the lurgy. Definitely not going for my usual 4 - 6 mile walk though, or I might have to crawl home 🤣
Gosh so sorry you feel so bad. Feel better soon. So glad your daughter is on the mend too. what a week you've had. I was just suggesting to MrsTuft that a few extra jabs may not hurt. glad to see you are doing that. Get well soon. Love the RedBull comment.
Well, I managed a 3 mile walk and with a stiff breeze it blew away the cobwebs.
Daughter is hopefully coming home tomorrow to finish her course of I.V. antibiotics herself. It is stressful doing them at home, but not as stressful as her being in a hospital over 40 miles away when I don't drive!
Daughter is still stuck in hospital. She was due home today, but one of her drug levels is too high, so she has to stay in for another night to try and sort it out. But on the plus side, her lung function has gone from 31% to 36% in a few days. Doesn't sound much, but it makes a big difference to her ability to move about. Hopefully it will keep going up while she finishes her course of antibiotics.
My cough is a bit better today, but boy, I'm shattered! But hey ho, onwards and upwards. Thank goodness for my stash of B12 - I'm gonna need a few extra jabs to get back to normal.
