If I have PA can I take Ibuprofen or any other anti inflammatories for severe sciatica & back pain? I have been using paracetamol but it’s not really helping. I vaguely recall my dentist telling me I shouldn’t take NSAIDs if I have PA. Is this right? Thanks 😊

pain killers for severe sciatica
Hope not !
I was on alot of pain killers .
I alternated between paracetamol and ibuprofen
Ibuprofen can cause bleeds if over used
Always shouls be taken after food.
I imagine its the connection with bleeds and stomach irritation
I was told to stop it as iron dropped .
I did .
Its an absorption problem though.
Then told to stop paracetamol ax rebound headaches thought.
I did but took ibruofen if desperate
I didnt have rebound headaches.
Seemingly vestibular migraines .
If you need pain relief alternate otc.pain killers perhaps
Get advice ftom a pharmacist
Gps will prescribe all sorts to trial
Hope you get relief 😌
PA is n autoimmune disorder of the stomach so could may you more susceptible to problems caused by constant use of NSAIDs. One important thing is to avoid taking them on an empty stomach as this seems to be a big contributor to problems.
A pharmacist might be able to help you with alternatives though reality is that most painkillers have side-effects.
You can ask your pharmacist for suppositories . In Europe you can by those paracetamol suppositories 500mg and 1000mg. over the counter. This bypass your stomach also works quicker. I use them if I have the occasional migraine when my stomach locks itself for anything coming in. There is also a Diclofenac suppository you can get prescribed. I use these now as I have had a fall and broken my shoulder.
If you are able to use a Chiropractor its worth a try, I had real relief from Sciatica after my first treatment😀
have you tried using an ice pack on your back 20 mins every hour wrapped in a tea towel and regular gentle stretches eg knee to chest. The ice will reduce the inflammation in the lumbar area x
Hi,
I just wondered if you are getting enough B12.
If B12 deficiency is under treated it may lead to problems affecting the spine.
That’s an excellent point! I am SI every other day at the moment because I had 2 courses of Nitrofurantoin for a UTI & it made me feel dreadful. Did a bit of research & found it strips the body of b12 & should be used with caution in people with PA. So it could well be that! Thanks so much
😊
That is exactly what happened to me. I had 17 days of nitrofurantoin and lost normal use of my legs. Please can you tell me what happened to you?
I had 2 courses of 3 days each, I got mouth sores, sore tongue, numbness in my big toe, thrush, everything went very dry (mouth, eyes, vagina), breathlessness, dreadful fatigue, so weak, depression, couldn’t stop crying, anxiety, all joint pain, back pain etc get much much worse. Took me a while to work out what it was, GP had no clue. Will never take that ab again! So sorry you were made so poorly too. Are you feeling any better now? X
It’s a relief to know it’s not just me! Sounds like you had a lucky escape. It’s six months later and I’m still trying to heal. I was in a wheelchair, then walking with a stick. Now I can walk unaided big only for about 15 minutes and I’m very fatigued ans still have numbness in my knees. Absolutely nightmare. Doctors were both clueless and arse covering!!
just posted link to Drugs that deplete B Vitamins.
(Love Agapanthus by the way lol)
Great. I can’t see that, where should I look? Thanks so much 😊
perhaps someone can do direct link for me.

Thanks. To think I was put on PPIs before I had my PA diagnosed. 😞
anti inflammatory also affects B12, along with co codamol
thanks for that, I became allergic to cephalosplorin ( family of antibiotics)
In my twenties. Head to toes in a rash, also had nerve studies on face ... So it was probably vit 12 d then
