…. My son did his b12 injection into his outer thigh and blood came out which doesn’t happen with me, am I overthinking it?

Yes most probably ! I've done this many times, even this week at the surgery had injection and the same thing happened. Occasionally a bruise but no problem.

Thankyou for putting my mind at rest, my condition does mean I tend to get anxious and overthink… I’ve been doing injections for many years but still find it nerve wracking… this site really helps!!!

Hi Tanyarialucia1965,

Yes, it does happen, as does bruising. All quite normal.

I SI in stomach & recently gave myself a lovely bruise. I am due to have an abdominal scan Monday. The lie of falling over and ‘bruising your stomach’ isn’t really plausible ! Oops.

Best wishes.

Use the finest needle for I.M. which is 25G x 1 inch . But a spurt of blood will always happen every now and then . Nothing to worry about .

Isn’t the finest needle 30 guage?

No - there is at least a 34 gauge.

(No idea if they are readily available or for what purposes they are appropriate.)

Thankyou everyone, I’ve always used a 23g blue needle , draw up and straight in ,as that was how I was first shown many years ago by my doctor , neither me or my son are bothered if it hurts… it’s just me getting freaked out sometimes by blood, which makes no sense after what I’ve been through , operations ect… I know there’s no major blood vessels in the upper arm or outer thigh, I just need reassurance sometimes which is why this group is great your comments are very helpful 😊😊😊

Hello! I always place an alcohol swab against my injection site immediately upon removing the needle in case there is bleeding. Have the swab ready in your other hand when removing the syringe.

This will stop bleeding from occurring. Keep applying slight pressure with swab until any bleeding stops. Best of luck!

My thighs don't like injections. I inject daily and now alternate between 4 IM and 4 SQ sites, but my thighs are the worst. They always leave painful lumps, almost always bruise, and sometimes bleed. I guess it's just that way for some people. If I wasn't injecting daily, I would avoid them altogether.

If blood comes out after, this means you injected in the vein. But it’s nothing to be alarmed about. I too have done it many times and initially it was alarming but I did some research and found that it is harmless.
