I possibly could have this condition

Hi people I am normally posting in Thyroid Uks brilliant forum. However one of the things that keeps cropping up. Is Low b12. My back story as follows

In summer 2017 I started to feel unwell thinking it was a cold or flu. However it turned out to be Glandular fever. 6 months of hell before the Drs put me on Levothyroxine. The main symptom I had was feeling off balance like I had been drinking a lot. However when I started the Levo the off balance feeling eventually left. from 2018-2021 I was fairly Okay. In 2021 I started feeling off balance again. Blood tests results showed My TSH was over range 8.3 supposed to be under 4. Anyway a dosage increase again sorted this out. Now just last month the dizziness has comeback. However Thyroid levels are all in check. That got me thinking and doing some research, low vitamin b12 and b9 can cause this symptom. I had it tested last week. Got to find out the results this week coming. I do supplement with a B12 pill. Plus just started a new B complex. anyone in this forum had a similar experience?

thanks in advance for replies

Hope your blood results give you some clarity. You know what 'the extra' symptoms are.

Hope you get some answers.

Keep a log.

Trouble is taking B12 already will skew your blood results to look good I believe.

I’m sure our knowledgeable friends will pop on here soon with help.Good luck. 😄

Hello Mary yes I thought that, I take that and a B complex as its advisable with being hypothyroid. Hoping it doesn't skew the results too much😀😆

There are any number of conditions that could cause dizziness. Have you got other symptoms, too - that you would not put down to thyroid ?My sister, who has Grave's disease (autoimmune thyroid) and psoriasis- so two autoimmune conditions- got very dizzy after her second covid vaccination. So badly affected that she fell down the stairs. GP aware that although rare, this reaction can happen -and told her it could take a few months for her to get okay again. She has recovered but was very tired and dizzy for quite a while.

Certainly B12 is one cause to look at though.

Hope that you can get answers soon from blood test.

Hello Cheryl. When I was left untreated with Hypothyroidism. My main symptom was feeling dizzy/ off balance. Starting the medication rectified it. However on the thyroid forum Vitamin b12 and b9 have also been mentioned as this symptom is common with these deficiencys. Plus when having a thyroid condition. Vitamins sometimes become low in absorbtion.

Additional deficiencies, where B12 deficiency is concerned, are usually folate, ferritin, vitamin D. These can be a problem if low, but within range, too. Any autoimmune condition, such as pernicious anaemia, can be accompanied by others - Hashimoto's, Grave's, psoriasis, vitiligo etc. I believe there are over 100, but these are the ones most often mentioned.

It isn’t unusual to have thyroid and low B12 together. I do. Hopefully your blood test will show something is not right, but, as you’ve been supplementing it won’t be that accurate?

Do you have any other symptoms apart from the dizziness and off balance feelings?

I also get flaky dry skin in eye brows and at either side of my nose

I would think that might be linked to the thyroid rather than low B12? Although saying that, I do have skin issues too. So it’s difficult to be sure which condition is causing the problem?

Hi Jelley93, I was diagnosed autoimmune hypothyroid last year and also suffer from dizziness and balance issues that have never fully resolved despite a good TSH reading , dizziness can vary in intensity for whatever reason. Tiredness and stress make it worse .

My B12 is on lower side of normal range 281ng/L Folate 12.8ug/L TSH 0.57 mu/L . Have requested Ferritin as not had this tested. Starting sublingual B12 too. I find the dizziness the worst unresolved issue - I cant play tennis without feeling dizzy & sick. Scrolling on a computer used to make me nauseous but thats improved with levothyroxine. I have been told that autoimmune issue can affect your vestibular system so I am trying to reduce my TPO thyroid antibodies by cutting gluten from my diet and have a referral to see an ENT consultant. Also get occasional tinnitus! Reading lots on autoimmune issues and gut health hence gluten free trial .

Hope you get some answers too 🙂

Look into Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Just a thought.

Hi Thursday's. Yes I had glandular fever in 2017. Which started everything off. Soon as I was started on levothyroxine the dizziness went away. I was on 100mcg for three years and was fine. Last year my TSH went up to 8.3 and dizziness returned. Started 125mcg and it went away in about a month. Now march it came back but my TSH was 0.05 with ft4 at 24. Drs reckon I am now overmedicated. Which does make sense as I was most stable on 100mcg. I've heard it could be low T3 conversion and b12 being low. Despite supplementing with it and b12 complex.
