Does anyone get nerve pain?

Welsh15 profile image
32 Replies

Hi everyone, does anyone else experience nerve pain ? I have been getting it in right side of head, neck, across shoulders and down right arm. I have been feeling really unwell recently with ongoing gastric problems. My gp says it could be gastric migraine and nothing to do with b12

Any advice appreciated, many thanks.

Pernicious Anaemia is caused by the destruction of the parietal cells which produce the intrinsic Factor and Stomach acid . Low or no stomach acid causes Hypochlorhydria or Achlorhydria. This lack of acid upsets the stomach flora which leads to tummy problems , we need stomach acid Some P.A. patients take an acidic drink at meal times like diluted Organic Cider Vinegar to compensate for this lack of acid .. More serious cases take Betaine HCL with Pepsin capsules . Also fermented foods can help to establish good stomach flora , as they are probiotic e.g. sauerkraut , real yoghurt, kefir , kimchi . Failing that a good probiotic capsule. Always chew food thoroughly , because that’s where the absorption of vitamins and minerals begins . The enzymes in saliva kick off the process very well if food is chewed thoroughly

Maybe additional B12 injections would help your nerve pain. .

Best wishes .

Thanks Wedgwood, I am now on domperidine for nausea and have tried lime juice in water with meals but stomach still painful to touch, dizzy and nauseous. Agreed to take short course of omeprozole, after much deliberation, after 5 days it has stopped my stomach feeling so painful. Possible ulcer.Take care and stay well.

Could be Helicobacter Pylori that is the problem then . In which case , anti-biotics will be prescribed . Then it would be useful for you to take probiotics after the problem is solved Hope that you get good treatment.

Thanks Wedgwood, I asked GP about H pylori and he said it had been tested for a few years ago and was negative.

But having tested negative a few years ago doesn’t mean that you don’t have it now, ! Helicobacter pylori is a cause of stomach ulcers

Try telling my GP that!!ahhhhh!

Yes , it’s just one long battle with GPs I very much feel I’m on my own dealing with health problems . The trouble I had with GP , The denial that there was anything wrong with me , when all the time I had P.A. Had to go private to get the diagnosis ( positive IFAB ) The attitude adopted when I brought the proof - awful .Because of delay in treatment I now have a an irreversible symptom with my feet . We are on our own unless we have the right illness ( I won’t go into that ) Glad to hear that you are experiencing no pain now.

Thanks Wedgwood, I would not wish b12 deficiency, whatever the cause on anyone. Just knowing how awful you can feel while also being made to feel like a hypochondriac is hard. Like you I have a numb and heavy leg and foot which I think is from long term vit b12 deficiency. From reading your posts I have found the confidence to purchase b12 and once I have had bloods done at doctors next week I will be treating myself.

Thank you ,take care and stay well

I’m sure that’s the right thing for you to do . It’s good that we know that we can come to no harm by self-injecting B12 , no matter how often . Otherwise I could not recommend it . It’s been my saviour . 👍

I’m so glad Welsh15 . Here’s wishing you improved health which will come with B12 injections . Great news !

What’s the irreversible symptom with your feet, if you don’t mind my asking? I experience numbness in my feet and severe cramping in my right foot and ankle, especially at night. Neurologist who diagnosed my PA prescribed Gabapentin, but it didn’t help at all. Suggested I drink tonic water before bedtime. Haven’t tried that, yet. He also said I would need B12 injections the rest of my life. My deficiency apparently was diagnosed too late to reverse any nerve damage. I walk like I’m drunk and I don’t even drink. Lol

I was able to get rid of numbness in my feet with IM.B12 injections ( Self -injected ) But i’m left with burning sensation in my feet . ( not to the touch ) Absolutely nothing will alleviate this sensation . I was eventually given nerve pain killers but they caused hallucinations ! So i have to live with it ! All caused by my GP trivialising my symptoms , implying that i was a Hypochondriac and ignoring a blood test that showed my B12 was well below range . …..

I heard that burning feet were a deficiency of another B Vit, -B3? perhaps, I can't remember exactly.

I’ve looked it up now — It’s B 5 . Thanks for your message .

symptoms related to B12 tend to be symmetric - because it is working at the cellular level, so if your symptoms are just on the right side that would imply that something else is going on - and a type of migraine is a reasonable candidate. Gastric migraine is a particularly unpleasant form though I believe it is more common in children than adults.I get migraines and for me the worst part and the worst migraines are those in which the gastric symptoms come to the fore - resulting in episodes where I have to get to the loo as the gut contracts so hard that stuff is expelled quite violently from both ends simultaneously. Even if the symptoms aren't that bad I do find my bowel movements are a lot more frequent. I also get pain running from head through neck and sometimes running down the arm. It responds to migraine medication, not to B12. The vagus nerve seems to be implicated and that runs down through the face to the gut.

My migraines were worse when I was B12 deficient but they aren't resolved by having enough B12.

The National Migraine Centre have an interesting series of podcasts on migraines and other types of headache, though migraines don't always come with headaches.

Thank you Gambit, that sounds interesting I will have a listen. I just wish I could get a definite diagnosis.

I forgot to add that am I putting all symptoms down to vitamin b12 deficiency?? The medics say not to place too much emphasis on b12 and now I am on 3monthly injections it has gone up and so I should be fine but I don't feel fine!!! It's like going round in circles.

Gambit62 profile image

its six of one and half a dozen of the other really - 3 months may not be adequate and if you have neurological symptoms you should be on 2 monthly anyway. All I can say is that being assymmetric implies that B12 isn't the only thing that is going on.

Bunbun123 profile image
Bunbun123 in reply to Gambit62

My symptoms are mainly nerve pain and they are not always symmetric. So I must disagree with you on that matter.

Gambit62 profile image
Gambit62Administrator in reply to Bunbun123

at no point have I said that assymmetric symptoms rule out B12 deficiency - but it does suggest that there is something else going on, eg another condition that has created a weakness on one side - I get more symptoms in my left food but that is because there was previous nerve damage relating to a broken ankle.

Me too. Mine were all one side. Face, head, shoulder, arm. Fbirder used to say the same thing, but mine all went not long after loading - after being there for years.

And no one side injury through all those areas.

Just reread your post Gambit re-: vagus nerve and migraine. My doctor just rung and said my blood results are all ok but I am sat here feeling nauseous, sore upper middle abdomen, tight down right side of head neck shoulder and arm and feeling rotten😪 and no further forward. I had hysterectomy 20 years ago and they found adhesions +++. I often wonder if the vagus nerve was damaged during their separation and the operation 🤔. Any help, info greatly appreciated. 🙏🙏

Sorry to hear that you are suffering so much - did your GP offer anything in relation to dealing with migraines. If not then I can only suggest that you try to contact the National Migraine Centre - you don't have to have a GP referral.

I find that peppermint or lavendar can help with the nausea but everyone is different and for some they could be a trigger

Yes, I used to get nerve pain in my left leg which has disappeared since starting B12 shots and thyroid treatment. I can’t say which one has given me the benefit because they were at the same time!

I used to also have gastric problems and reasonably regularly take omeprazole but that’s also calmed down

Good luck x

All my nerve pain was one side and all my nerve pain disappeared with b12 injections. After a year or more of debilitating pain.

I had about thirty symptoms and 80% went away not long after loading doses. My GP thinks b12 deficiency is all about fatigue. Wasn't overly interested in hearing about the other thirty. I told her I am not telling you for me, I am telling you for your other patients and all the money siphoned out of our health care with misdiagnosis and screenings. I got nowhere in my eyes but had a NP send over my symptoms so that they would 100% be on file.

All the best to you.

I get nerve pain thru my left hips and back. Been in therapy for it.I have h pylori. Omeprazole works some. They are saying surgery in the base of windpipe because it's not closing which in turn is letting acid run up my windpipe all the way in throat.

Glad to read that more people have nerve pain on one side. My neurologist told that it is not possible it should be symmetric so his comclusion was that I have a hernia. But I doubt because by taking injections it was going better till.. I had Citanest at the dentist than my problems came back. after one year it is slowly getting better but my left foot is still a problem
