Although I laughed at the ‘once every 5 years’ the haematologist finds someone who has this rare issue. It seems like there’s an awful lot of us around for something so out of the ordinary and given how long most of us suffer or don’t get any support from our doctors I can’t believe it’s that rare.

Also couldn’t help thinking maybe once per month hasn’t been enough to repair his foot.

I agree, and the 'one in 10,000 people' seems a bit dubious too...

I was thinking the same thing as ktwing but then my latest doctor, who does seem to know a bit about it and has told me to 'go for it' regarding SI, said she had never had a patient before who had actually been diagnosed with PA... this despite the storage fridge at the surgery holding quite a lot of boxes of hydroxo for their patients who need it!

Huh, are you in the UK?

No, Australia. Been reasonably lucky with doctors so far, apart from one who is British-trained and treats B12 accordingly!

I'm in the USA and I've seen at least 12 doctors and have gotten nowhere. If the nurse practioner I saw while on vacation hadn't prescribed B12 injections weekly I'm sure I would be dead right now.

I’m in the US too and they are CLUELESS when it comes to B12! How long have you been getting injections for ?

Sounds so familiar. Thanks for sharing. I’m wondering if the subject could have made more progress in his recovery had he been getting more than a monthly injection as his maintenance dose?

Thank you for sharing this article. It really hit home. I’m in the US and it’s sad that it’s been 21 years since this piece was published in the Washington Post and the struggle with diagnosis and treatment continues!! I just think of all the people who are suffering needlessly that need help and aren’t getting it. I was extremely fortunate to have found a doctor that recognized my PA symptoms immediately and began my treatment.
