anti parietal cell antibody test For b12
A parietal cell antibody test is not a frequent test and it is only done when a person has signs and symptoms that suggest vitamin B12 deficiency. So if you are seeing some symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency then it is worth doing.
Yes, if you want to find out if you have Pernicious Anemia, and add a Gastrin Serum Test to the the order as well, that will solidify it.
I had this test right at the start. A positive test can mean all sorts and is not used in isolation to diagnose PA
I had a negative result which still does not rule our PA but a lower % of possibility.
I certainly cannot absorb b12 from food or tablets. Or else my body not bothering to even try now . on injections for life .
The intrinsic factor antybody test is used . It picks up about 50 % of those with PA.
Should really be done before In jections start as high levels of b12 in your blood csn causes a false positive ???
Minefield.
I dont know the science behind it all
But neither do the medics !!
On its own - no. About 10% of people without PA test positive for GPC antibodies.
But it can be supporting evidence for PA.
My diagnosis was based on - undetectable levels of B12, symptoms of a B12 deficiency, gastric atrophy in the fundus and corpus but absent from the antrum, metaplasia, high gastrin and positive for GPC antibodies.
