I guess it depends how ill you were. My sister-in-law was low on iron and had haemoglobin as low as 72, ferritin was 7. After the infusion it took probably week or two to start to feel the benefits.

Thanks for your reply. It’s been a week for me. Going for another infusion tomorrow. Hopefully my breathing will improve after a while. Guess I’m just impatient. Lol

I know, it's irrirating to wait when it kicks in. Hopefully it will happen soon, it's so awful to be short of breath!

Batbara,

although this forum has anaemia in its title Pernicious Anaemia is actually an auto-immune disorder of the gut, which leads to B12 deficiency - one of the most common symptoms is a type of anaemia.

Patients with PA can also have problems absorbing other minerals and vitamins, including iron.

However the forum isn't really about iron deficiency and treatment, which means that strictly speaking this post is off topic, but I have left it for now as it may be relevant to other members who have problems with iron absorption.

My dr. Didn’t say I had pernicious anemia, but he did say that I don’t absorb iron. Is there another forum I should be looking into? Thank you

the answer to that really depends on what is causing the iron absorption problems

There are, unfortunately a number of conditions that can lead to iron absorption problems. Did your GP give you any clues at all as to what was causing the iron absorption problems

He said I have poor absorption.

sounds like a bit of chocolate tea-pot - may be that he genuinely doesn't know what is causing the absorption problem but it would be better to say that. it may be that they feel that knowing the cause wouldn't affect the treatment, or that it might be quite difficult to get a differential diagnosis, ie identify the cause - may be worth asking next time you see him. Different causes can have different consequences even when the treatment is the same which can make it worth trying to find out what the cause is.

I will definitely be asking questions as to why he thinks I have poor absorption. Maybe there are some tests that can confirm this .

Good that you feel better now, your before-condition must have been very critical.

"Blood performs many important functions within the body, including:

# Supply of oxygen to tissues (bound to hemoglobin, which is carried in red cells)

# Supply of nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids (dissolved in the blood or bound to plasma proteins (e.g., blood lipids))

# Removal of waste such as carbon dioxide, urea, and lactic acid Immunological functions, including circulation of white blood cells, and detection of foreign material by antibodies

# Coagulation, the response to a broken blood vessel, the conversion of blood from a liquid to a semisolid gel to stop bleeding

# Messenger functions, including the transport of hormones and the signaling of tissue damage

# Regulation of core body temperature

# Hydraulic functions

Wish you a good convalescence.

Hi, your doctor will have your haemaglobin level from before the infusion, and from that should be able to estimate when your level should reach normal. It may mean that you will need another infusion. It will take a couple of weeks or more depending on how low you were to stop feeling breathless over slight exercise. My wife has had a number of infusions and it does take time.

If you were dangerously low you would have been given blood. So good luck

I did have another infusion today. I guess I need to be a little more patient instead of looking for instant gratification LOL! Thank you for sharing .😊
