Injections for PAS HELP
If the injections provided by your doctor are adequate to stop your symptoms and keep them at bay you won’t need to self inject. People self inject usually as a last resort because they need more than is provided by their doctor.
If you’re in the UK and having the recommended frequency of injections (6 loading doses over 2 weeks followed by an injection every 2 or 3 months although if you have neurological symptoms this is increased to continued every other day injections until no further improvement and then every 2 months) you may find this is sufficient. If it isn’t, you’ll find this forum a great resource to help you decide how to help yourself going forward.
You may also find it helpful to take a multivitamin each day.
Incidentally, was your folate level also tested? If that was low you are likely to need to take extra folic acid.
Our practice nurse asked me at the first of the loading injections if I thought I would be able to self inject. Over the course of the following 5 injections in 2 weeks she first coached me about the procedure, then had me actually do the injection with the loaded syringe with her close by then me doing to preparation and injecting as she observed and finally me doing the whole thing whilst she wrote the notes into the computer, only giving the occasional glance in my direction.
After than she declared herself satisfied and I was recorded as Self Administering my maintenance doses. That has been a real boon as I developed Peripheral Neuropathy and I think I would have gone stark raving mad if I had to put up with that every day. After all this condition we have isn't a minor matter it is life threatening if not treated properly. Who better to give the treatment than the owner of the threatened life.
If you ask your nurse she/he might be able to help you and show you.
If not check out some videos on YouTube on how to self inject B12 into your thigh.
Totally agree with JanD236 . . You are quite lucky to get a diagnosis - It’s often very difficult . .Not everyone with PA needs to self inject , but you will find many members on this forum do , because they join the society as a result of their desperation , when they become so unwell through under - treatment .
You know where to come if you have any concerns . I wish you the very best for your treatment .
