What can anyone tell me about this symptom. It’s like a band around my rib cage which is fine in the morning and more annoying as the day goes on and goes away at night

I haven't got it with b12 defiency. I've had that with shingles even after the blisters have healed. There is a nerve band there. So perhaos affected as peripheral nerves. ?

I only get it when extremely stressed. Not had it for years.

Not sure what you can do about it.

Please go see the doctor to have it assessed. Have heard some of these shingle cases can be very serious.

Best wishes.

Never heard of it before. It appears to be a common symptom of MS (hence the name). Never heard of it in connection with B12.

What does your doctor say?

Hi Gsmandin

I have had this and only had it when I was B12 deficient and have had it re-occur while getting the B12 into my system. It was the first symptom to go when I started on B12 initially, but due to not getting enough and having to up my frequency of injections it appeared to come back and was really quite persistent for a week or two. It seems to have disappeared again, so I hope that it has gone now.

It seems that the deficiency has really affected my nerves I am getting a good deal of neuralgic pain now I have more B12. I hope this will subside eventually. I am sure we are not the only ones to have had this!

Gallbladder will also cause that symptom. I felt miserably full around my upper rib cage and around to my back. Not pain, just uncomfortable

For me, the band was worse in front and continuous throughout the day. My abdomen also felt tight and I had to keep my back slightly curved or I'd feel short of breath. (I also felt like there was something in my abdomen pulling down hard. Hard to explain).

The band/tightness acted just like my other symptoms - slowly getting better after injections, returning with other symptoms whenever I did too much or was waiting for my next injection.

I had something similar which was caused by an oesophageal spasm triggered by acid reflux. Most uncomfortable and a bit frightening, thinking possible heart attack !

Hiatal hernia? This would cause congestion during the day as you consume each meal. Endoscopy? Also, you have two valves; ileocecal valve and the hiatus valve. These valves should open and close as you eat but sometimes get stuck open. The hiatal is right below the rib cage. An endocrinologist or chiro can check. A gentle manipulation usually one to 3x will correct it unless there is a hernia.

I get something like this and it is due to pressure from my bra around my ribcage. I've become more sensitive to the pressure over the years. So I choose shapewear that doesn't grip so hard.

I also get the MS hug occasionally. I have nerve damage so I have always thought that this is a symptom of nerve damage since it is shared by MS sufferers too. I have recently increased the frequency of my injections and changed to Methyl form and the hug seems to have disappeared. My niece has MS and we swap notes. We do share several symptoms which relate to nerve damage.

I have MS Hug with B12 deficiency. It's been the symptom that has lingered the longest. 18 months after injections started I still have it. It's a little better but still present. My B12 got pretty low. At my worst in Feb 2018 I had severe fatigue, shortness of breath, numbness in hands, pins and needles in legs, "ms hug", brain fog, irritability, and signs of depression. Everything is all but gone except for the ms hug. I have no other conditions besides the B12d so I'm pretty sure it's from the nerve impact of that. Good luck!
