Folate is what they test for in a blood test. It is what participates in the folate loop where B12 is the catalyst between it and the methionine loop, which processes off homocysteine and generates the methionine for DNA. Google images “methionine loop” to get a picture where folate fits into the metabolism.

Folic acid is an analog that is stable for shelf storage and which the body converts into folate. The molecules in Green vegetables also need to get converted into folate in the body.

You also need a daily multivitamin to provide the metals and minerals that are used up in metabolism. You normally get these from meat and vegetables and greens. But with B12 there is a tendency to run short of these as well.

For folic acid, do not take more than 5 mg per day. Start with 400 mcg or 800 mcg OTC folic acid for a week and see how it goes. Gradually build up by adding a tablet a week to the regime. Spread the folic acid throughout the day. I’m currently at 2x 800 mcg tablets 3x times a day. I find if I take it before a known stress period, like my twice daily commute, it helps me get through.

I am on weekly cyano so I’m supplementing with 2x 5000 mcg methyl sublinguals daily at two of the folic acid doses.

I’ll also add methyl sublinguals about 30 minutes before work place meetings to clear my head and help use both halves of my brain. It helps clear out and brain fog.

It is a balance between B12 and folic acid. You’ve got the B12 sorted now it is a matter of finding the right balance for you of the folic acid.

When I increased folic acid too quickly, i found that I got thumping in my ears whenever I turned my head. Not anything scientific but annoying just the same.

Do you exercise?

Are you gluten or dairy free?

Do you keep a logbook and assess daily severity score of your own choosing for each symptom? This is what you will use 6 months to a year from now to assess any repair of nerve damage. Yes, it is that slow. You will forget about symptoms as they disappear and only remember them whenever you have a set back and they pop up again.

Stick to a regime / diet for 2 weeks at a time as you change things around to allow your hepatic loop to detoxify / stabilize.

Thanks for getting back to me I really appreciate it I haven’t been able to exercise since I got this B12 deficiency as I have severe nerve pain and pins and needles among other things, can I ask do you think a liquid form of folic acid would be better then tablet form, I also was diagnosed with iron anaemia and a vitamin d deficiency

I am a vegan yes. I was also told to take folate I am so confused at what to do I feel like the Doctors are useless my methylcobalamin has helped a lot of symptoms but I feel like like they return again it’s so weird, right now I have moments were I am breathless some days feel better somedays feel worse is this normal ?
