That’s just outrageous . Your aunt obviously needs injections . Can you accompany her to the doctors , and challenge this ? She must have absorbtion issues . Was she ever diagnosed with Pernicious Anaemia? She will start to have more symptoms if she cannot get her injections . You can have PA even if the test for it proves negative . Doctors should know this . If you have no joy in getting the injections reinstated , come back to this forum for good advice . Your aunt’s health is in danger . Best wishes .

Pernicious Anaemia can cause a kind of dementia if it is left untreated ,and B12 injections are the only treatment . Tablets will not help PA. PA has so very many symptoms . You should be able to find out if she was ever diagnosed with PA . What was the reason for her having B12 injections in the first place ? Unfortunately you only have 10 minutes to question the doctor . Neurological symptoms are treated by injections every other day until there is no improvement. This is official NHS treatment . I don’t unfortunately have the necessary information to link you to these documents .

But you can find information on “pinned posts “ on the right hand side of this site .

I feel particularly close to this problem , because I am 100% sure that my mother died with untreated Pernicious Anaemia. I have PA myself so I am really acquainted with the symptoms . I saw these symptoms in my mother , but then had no idea about PA . I saw her disintegration over several years , and she had a kind of dementia amongst many other PA symptoms .

. When I managed eventually to get a diagnosis ( had to pay for a private GP , as my low B12 reading(150) was classified as ‘normal’ by my GP ) I could only get an injection every 3 months in spite of totally numb feet . I am forced to self -inject once a week to keep feeling well .

I wish you the very best for this afternoon .

I’d fight for the injections back and make sure she’s getting plenty of folate and her ferritin is at a good level. Age discrimination at its finest.

Sudden Aggressiveness with someone with any cognitive decline can often be attributed to infection and by that any type infection- tooth, chest, ear, but most often in elderly UTIs.Might be a good idea to bring in a urine sample in the morning to rule that out as well. First urine of the day after waking is the best time.

You’re welcome. Big change since infection cleared ? UTIs and the aggressive ness is something I unfortunately know all too much about. They are very difficult for the family to deal with as they cause delirium. And they’ll cause delirium in people without dementia too. All the more important to ensure she is getting b12 injections to boost immune system. If the infections don’t clear let me know, I know a lot of different approaches to get rid of them.
