Has anyone used Deplin ? A form of Folate.....

It’s supposed to be an active form of Folate I think and much more effective than Folic Acid the synthetic form. Also used to treat depression as I read on Wikipedia.

Never heard of it before....just wandering if anyone has used or know more about it.

This picture is specifically talking about Deplin.

Hi Ryaan, I use Jarrow folate, it’s worked well for me.

Marketing hype.

‘Active’ folate is a meaningless term. There are at least seven different forms of folate, five of them are active and the other two are easily converted to the other forms.

For the vast majority of people folic acid is just as good as any of the other six forms.

Yes...Thanks Fbirder, Folic Acid works fine for me as when I’m low I get shortness of breath as one of the main symptoms and goes away after taking Folic Acid for a couple of weeks.

Do you know why all my emails from healthunlocked go into Trash mail instead of inbox. Can I undo that ?

The email problem is a setting in either your email supplier or the program being used to read them.

Your best bet of fixing it is to go to the website of your email supplier and look up 'whitelist' in the help section. A whitelist is the opposite of a blacklist.

Here's how to do it for gmail - lifewire.com/how-to-whiteli...

I’ve Blacklisted Healthunlocked....Lol.

Mine is hotmail, now known as Outlook I think.

Will do that.

Thanks

My general doctor in California wanted me to look into taking Deplin to help with the B-12. She said it was very expensive here. I have MTHFR and I have sensitivity to taking b12 methylcobalamin. So I inject Cyanocobalamin. My general doctor was concerned about the B12 working in my system without the injection the methylcobalamin. My B12 Specialist Doctor said to not worry about taking the Deplin for 2 reasons for me. 1) I have trouble with absorption thru my stomach, so injections. 2) She can see that my B12 is completing the process and working at a cellular level due to my homocysteine levels going down. In regards to getting enough folate and doing it in a safe way, My B12 Doctor said to just increase my leafy greens like Kale and Chard, etc. I already eat that, so I just added (1) more portion a day and I think I really see the B12 working better. I am new to all of this and I still had cognition issues, so I hope I explained this right. If someone else can explain this better, I would appreciate it! Take Care!

Folic Acid which is very cheap works well for most people. You should try it instead of the expensive Deplin.

Thanks for your reply.

I have pernicious anemia. I told my doctor I had depression and anxiety. He put me on Deplin. I asked the pharmacist are there any side effects and was told no. So I took 4 days of the Deplin before I realized that the increase in anxiety was a huge side effect of Deplin. And I mean HUGE . I threw away the rest of the bottle . I never had a folate problem. And I wasn’t that depressed. If you decide to try Deplin remember if you feel like your going to jump out of your skin.... it’s the Deplin. I was able to raise my folate from 9.1 to 18 in 2 months doing 400mcg of folinic acid and eating high folate foods.

So I’m interested in your post because I feel like crawling out of my skin. I’m wondering if it’s the Deplin. I do need it for depression though. Do you think lowering the dose or taking every other day would help??

All I can say is what I experienced. My doctor put me on Deplin because I told him I was depressed. My folate level was 8.4 At the time he put me on Deplin which isn’t that low . Don’t know if I was just super sensitive because I have 2 copies of the MTHFR gene which comes into play with the folate cycle . Anyway if you go on to Dr. Ben Lynch’s website he comments he doesn’t understand why Deplin is ever prescribed . He goes on to say if you are low in b12 the excess of folate is difficult for your body to handle. I even read accounts where it was prescribed to children and the kids were beating the walls and their parents up. I was able to raise my folate level up with 400 to 800mcg folinic acid and a high folate diet from 8.4 to 18.6 in just a few weeks. And I don’t feel that depression anymore . It’s what worked for me . Please google the side effects of Deplin online. It will answer your question. Good luck:)

I take everything 'Dr' Lynch says with a huge bucket of salt.

I don’t believe most of what I read also. All I can say is Deplin was horrible for me. Your the one who suggested to me that 400to 800 mcg would be adequate and... it was. Thank you for that information

Deplin for depression ? So you’re low on Folate ?

Does that mean you can’t take Folic Acid for some reason ?

How are your B12 and Vitamin D levels as they can cause depression if low/deficient.

Also helps if your Ferritin levels are righ.

I’ve suffered from depression for over 20 years and have been on anti depressants, although they initially helped me, later on they were causing me bad side effects.

B12 injections helped greatly with depression and so did Vitamin D (2000 iu) a day.

I have the MTHFR mutation so he put me on deplin. I do take B12 injections because oral B12 wasn’t effective. My d levels have been ok- i take a supplement. I do have low ferritin and struggle to take the iron due to side effects. I’m really trying lately to take the iron.

I stopped the deplin 2 days ago. I have to see if it’s causing this nervousness/ restlessness.

Thank you for your help

Look up “ methyl trapping “ and it explains what happens when you supplement excess folate without proper b 12 levels !

Folate Trap explained - healthunlocked.com/pasoc/po...

It can happen with low B12 even if you don't supplement with folate.

Scary stuff.......I take 5mg Folic Acid daily and inject B12 every 2 weeks.

Does it say what kind of symptoms a person gets with the Folate trap or is it general feeling of being unwell due to lack of other Folates ?

fbirder profile image
fbirder in reply toRyaan

If you're having injections of B12 then you don't need to worry about the folate trap. Because folates are involved in many different processes the symptoms of folate deficiency (or the folate trap) are quite varied. The most obvious are similar to those of a B12 deficiency.

5000mcg = 5mg ?......like the study on 1 person.

So I shouldn’t be taking it ?.....I take it because I have a bad diet, so just pop the pill instead of eating the greens.

fbirder in reply toRyaan

5000 mcg is what is prescribed for people with a severe deficiency - and then only for a short period. Nobody needs to take that much and there are good reasons not to. There are some doubts as to how safe it is to have large amounts of folate floating around inside you.

400 to 1000 mcg should be plenty.
