Red blood cell count (426..)Below range4.35 10*12/L [4.5 - 6.5] Below low reference limit - Low RBC can be indicative of iron, folate or B12 deficiency (can also be caused by dehydration...and other things too)
Mean cell haemoglobin level (XE2pb) Above range33.2 pg [27.0 - 32.0] Above high reference limit - Can indicate macrocytic (large red cell anaemia). Can also be raised in smokers or heavy drinkers (not saying that this applies to you 😉).
Thanks, and thought provoking! Dehydration can be possible on that morning, it was a fasting blood test taken around 11:00 and I really do not remember what I did that morning before the test... Drinking and smoking, mea culpa!
I just find it strange that I presented at the surgery saying I had all the symptoms of B12 deficiency and they did not think these results were important enough to mention as being out of whack! In fact, I would not have known at all if I had not requested the full results. And I have a blood test taken a month earlier but not then known to me or the surgery which show these same results but only just in range. Of course, the B12 test was normal (872), I had been supplementing heavily for a week prior to the bloods being taken.
