B12 level was 152 then 2 weeks later 107 8 months pregnant then GP said readings satisfactory don’t need injection - my understanding is low B12 in pregnancy is potential problem for baby - am I right to insist I have it thanks
B12: B12 level was 152 then 2 weeks... - Pernicious Anaemi...
B12
interpreting serum B12 test results during pregnancy is extremely difficult.serum B12 levels tend to be lower during pregnancy.
B12 is important for foetal development and that is part of the reason why serum B12 levels drop.
what are your symptoms? how long have you had them? have you had a full blood count?
sorry-no precise answers to your questions
Have to confess - I’m a ANP - my daughter has been having B12 for a year ( and me 44yrs ) she had alopeaci / then iron low then Low B12 started her on top up regime and continued then she went for her injection in December and was told her reading was satisfactory and did not need it - I’m sure I’m right in saying to stop during pregnancy is rediculous and once started on B12 you very rarely stop . She is exhausted but more so - sore mouth - she just keeps saying they told her her level was 150 then 135 now 107 in 3 weeks - although I don’t understand firstly why they would just stop B12 but not at 32 weeks when anaemic anyway - now she’s worry about baby , she’s so tired , swelling up everywhere , no energy , headaches Many thanks
Just want her argument to be factual and checking my mother instinct isn’t taking over !
you are correct that the injections should not have been stopped.
given the circumstances I would suggest that you / your daughter contact (and join) the PAS proper.
They may be able to contact the GP on your behalf and explain things and get the injections re-instated.
pernicious-anaemia-society....

Unfortunately the PAS is a small organisation and run by volunteers with the result that getting through may be a bit difficult at times and their capacity to respond can be limited.
Have you spoken to your daughter's mid-wife?
yes , the midwife booked her for repeat bloods - that was even lower , spoke to another Gp and he also stated not required
suggest that you contact the PAS directly
trying to do some research of pubmeds to see if there is anything scientific you could throw at the GPs will let you know what I found.
not really been able to find anything useful - main risk factor from low serum B12 levels in pregnancy is premature birth. levels do drop very significantly in second and third tremesters.
the problem is really that your GP is failing to treat someone with an identified absorption problem as they should be treated - really do think your best bet is to speak directly with the PAS given the urgency of the situation
Wyd? That is LOW B 12 but if your pregnant anything can harm a fetus. I would think more damage comes from low B12. That's essential to nervous system and brain issues and stuff. Get a second opinion just in case. He could be right but I was 119 and very tired and weak and confused, just not pregnant. I live in the US.
