How does everyone feel the day of their b12 injection ?

I know we’re all different and react differently depending on circumstances and severity and length of time between injections etc bit interested to hear how people feel directly after their injections?

Had my third one today (after initial loading doses) and I feel totally depleted, flat and very very low in mood. Didn’t help that the nurse was insisting that my symptoms are probably more menopausal than b12 deficiency as I was tested again recently and levels were 1400, I didn’t bother explaining that this figure doesn’t correlate with symptoms.

Does anyone ever feel amazing straight after, and do you think this is in line with the right amount of time b12 is given after the last one?

Thanks in advance - from a still learning flat as a pancake newbie ! x

Hey Mandymoos8

After my injection, I feel drained and have to sleep. Sometimes it is a short

nap and other times I sleep for hours.

Hi Mandymoos8!

I’ve been SI for about 10 months now, 2-3 times per week and I range from having energy to wanting to nap for just a short time or sometimes and rarely all day. My mood can be affected or not. So strange how it works.

Hi!

I'm sorry I missed your post on this earlier in the year but hope I can help now.

The processes that B12 is involved with - DNA synthesis, nerve function and energy release - all use other vitamins and minerals to function properly.

This means that many things are used in conjunction with the B12 and if B12 has been in short supply then the processes will have stopped working fully - which produces your symptoms.

When you then input B12 everything starts to work again suddenly. If any of the other vitamins and minerals are in short supply they will be used up and you may experience deficiency symptoms of them.

B9 (folate) is used most alongside B12 and so it is easy to get short of this.

If you read Clivealive's replies on this you will see that the deficiency symptoms of B9 are very similar to those of B12d and include fatigue (poor energy release) and low mood/anxiety.

Potassium is a mineral that is also used more, particularly in nerve transmission, and a lack of this too can make you feel bleak.

Many people find it helpful to take a broad spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement plus extra folate, potassium, magnesium and iron.

Most supermarket A-Z multivitamins and minerals are as good as any and not expensive and it is worth Googling the others to find out what the symptoms of deficiency and excess are and to see what sources of them you may like to eat and drink.

You may be feeling tired as a result of having used up something else which becomes the "limiting factor" and so shuts you down or it may be that the deficiency has caused some damage and your body needs to sleep to heal itself now you've given it the tools (the B12) to do so.

Either way it suggests to me that you aren't getting your jabs often enough and probably need more supporting supplements too.

There's more information in some of my other replies which you can find by going to my profile (by double clicking on my name) and looking under "replies". You will see lots of other great contributions from others on here too.

Thank you so much for all this useful information, I was advised to take a good vitamin b complex, do you think this will be ok to take in conjunction with a good multivitamin ? Thank you again

The multivitamin and mineral supplement will have everything that the B-Complex has - but much more besides and all in well balanced ratios - so no, you don't need both and it can be undesirable to double up on some of the B vitamins so only take one or the other.

Hi Deniseinmilden I’ve just put another post up about this, the multivitamin has far less Thiamin and half the folate. So wondering if the b complex is the important ones to be concentrating on. And if you can overdose on any b vitamins!

I felt the same during my first doses. After a couple of months I didn't feel anything after an injection. It was only if I missed one that I felt bad. Give it some time.

If you had megaloblastic anaemia caused by low B12 then it's possible that your body is running a bit low on potassium for the first two weeks. When the anaemia is being fixed the body indulges in a rapid burst of red cell production, when can deplete potassium. Using Lo-Salt instead of real salt can correct this. Don't take potassium supplements unless a doctor recommends it. Both potassium and sodium are involved in nerve transmission. An imbalance between the two (such as consuming too much potassium) can disrupt the process.
