hi all id just like to add my story. iv had lots of the symptoms for a long time but mostly over the last 5months its got worse, 2months ago i went to drs with a really bad headache i have had for 3moths it was like my head with stuffed with cotton wool and a pressure sort of feeling that only went away with laying down. they just said it was my anxiety which i have had all my life and then 6weeks ago and i found myself having loads of panic attacks i actually ended up in a and e cos i was that scared about what was happening .by the way im a big worrier and always think there is something wrong with me they said it was anxiety again and they gave me beta blockers which did help a lot for the palpitations and hearing my pulse in my ear.so after that i was just waiting for it all to go away. not wanting to go out not wanting to talk to anyone couldn't even be bothered to txt anyone back and just felt sad all the time really sad and worried. then 2weeks ago my dr said lets try a blood test as you might be b12 deficient so they took the blood and from that day i thought id take b12 pills from the supermarket just in case. and i felt 10times better after that first day, however, I got a bad cold that same day too nose was running so much and sneezing a lot. but even tho i felt like crap it still felt better then it did so i didn't care. then the results came in 3days ago and i was 120 and they said i should be 500. they put me on cyanocobalamin tablets 50mcg 3times a day for 3months. they say i didn't need the injection type as i have the ability to absorb them this way whatever that means. i was just wondering if this rings true with anyone else? also, i do feel a bit better but still feel very sleepy and dizzy now and then but it is not dizzy its a different feeling that i can't explain. do they take a while to work? should i start to feel worse before i get better ? and was that cold-related? thanks for reading if you managed to get to the end lol :) ps because I have anxiety anyway its hard to know what's real or not with me as i and everyone else had but the way i am as been anxiety. maby iv not had anxiety and it was this all along in disguise

Hi Awksguy you cold is probably just a coincidence.

The fact that you feel better having the cyanocobamalin B12 tablets is reason to believe that you do not have an absorption problem with your digestive system.

The problem you do have is finding out why you became so B12 deficient in the first place.

Could it be your diet? We source B12 naturally by eating animal products - meat, fish, seafood, eggs, poultry and dairy produce and to go with the B12 we need B9 (Folate or folic acid" which comes from eating leafy green vegetables, sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, peas, beans etc. which go to make up the traditional Meat and two veg meals.

Stress and worry can "use up" Vitamin B12 so try to do less of those.

Are you on any medications which may affect absorption of B12 via your digestion?

I am not a medically trained person but I've had Pernicious Anaemia (a form of B12 deficiency) for more than 46 years.

I wish you well.

i eat meat daily and im not on any other medication. i, however, have had a very stressful year and im generally a very anxious person could i have done this to myself?

also, i don't eat as many greens as i should and i do skip a lot of meals mainly breakfast

the dr told me i have plenty of red blood cells but not enough b12 to latch onto them i should of asked her more questions really but i was just happy to finally have a reason for how i was feeling.

is there anything else i could take alongside the b12? thanks

We normally have two or three years store of B12 in our liver and it gets "topped up" from our daily diet. Improve your eating habits and reduce your stress levels and you should be fine.

Having breakfast is important and I see some cereals are now "fortified" with both Vitamin B12 and folic acid so they would "kick-start" your day. Toast and Marmite would give you B12 :) (I love it)

Your doctor sounds as though she's "on the ball" regarding B12 (many aren't) and you should ask her or your pharmacist for advice on further supplements such as multivitamins because you may not need any as you say all your other blood test levels were "perfect".

I hope your cold improves soon and I wish you well.

Thanks for your advice .yes I love marmite too. Yeah if been doing a lot of research about b12 and seeing a lot of people are have problems with their drs regarding b12. Lucky for me my Dr has a b12 deficiency too. So I guess she knows the signs. Have a good day Clive x

I believe the dose you are taking is too small and will not replenish your B12 fast. Also, there is no need to take 3 times a day. I would suggest to consider taking B12 1000mcg once a day for 3 months then can reduce the dose (preferably as metbylcobalamin)
