Hi Enfield13,

I've just started having B12 privately due to restriction on NHS and they cost 36 each time.

Would you mind sharing where you get your self injections from?

Thanks

I get my B12 ampoules from an excellent German online pharmacy

“ versandapo.de in English “

Search for Hydroxocobalamin, and a drop-down list appears . Click on Hydroxocobalamin acetat , and you will see the choice . I buy 100 ampoules at a time as I inject weekly . The sell bu date is almost 3 years hence. I like 1mg x 1ml ampoules ( less to inject ) Rotexmedica costing about €55.00 . You can get 1mg x 1ml ampoules by Hevert . A bit more expensive . Courier cost €9.00 no matter how many you buy . You need to register for first purchase . You can use PayPal or a card .

Needkes , syringes swabs sharps box from Medisave . U.K. Best wishes .

Hi wedge wood, thought I’d go down self-injecting route to top me up so wondered what is the best type of syringe to buy? I have ordered ampoules but now confused by the difference in syringe types!! Thanks

Hello Deetha . I use 2 ml luer slip syringes . I don’t know if this is correct , but they work fine . I use I.M. method and use a long - 1 1/2 inch needle 23 gauge to withdraw the B12, and a 1inch 25 gauge needle to inject with. This is the finest gauge needle I can find for a 1inch needle . Look at plenty of u tube videos -some are really helpful, others not so . Good luck !🍀

Use 2ml syringe irrespective of whether you use a 1ml or 2ml ampoule .

Thanks Wedgewood your information... it is much appreciated. It feels like a minefield? Will order from m Medisave as I know them well and order from BD .

I use 1 inch 30 g to inject with. 30 g is about half the diameter of the 25 g.

Where do you get those needles please ? I haven’t found them at Medisave . U.K. Amazingly thin needles !

in reply towedgewood

BD 305128 or 305108

both BD needles are the same - one is for Europe (and cheaper), the other for the States.

In using the 1 inch 30 g, the 25 g looks as big as a turkey baste. :)

30g gives a little back pressure (unlike the gi-normous 25g) ... but at about half the diameter of the 25g .... who cares.

and

medpluspro.com/bd-precision...

(and click the 'BD PrecisionGlide Regular Bevel Needles' link on page to find 305128)

Even though the medplus site does not list 305108 (for Europe) - when you call sales and they find it. 888-277-0282

Btw sorry forgot to add..I don't think you can over dose on injections as they are water soluable. There's lots of people on here who are very experienced. Glad you asked the question. Good luck

No need to worry about overdosing -you can’t . There are scientific documents about this , but I haven’t got the reference . I hear that some people inject daily. There is no danger . Carry on keeping yourself well . . Best wishes .

For your info wedgewood

Second item down on the left "Treatment with high dose vitamin B12 shown to be safe for more than 50 years"

stichtingb12tekort.nl/our-e...

Hope this helps

enfield13 do you know what your Folate level is as this and B12 help your iron to make red blood cells and to perform properly in your body.

I am not a medically trained person but I've had P.A. (a form of B12 deficiency) for more than 45 years.

I wish you well

Hi!

The answer seems to be that you can inject as often as you need to and if you need it, you need it!

Some people have been self injecting daily for decades and use 1.5mg ampoules each day and have done nearly 1000 jabs to good effect.

Some people do 2 jabs a day.

Please be aware that the more you need, the more likely you are to benefit from taking supporting supplements - maybe a broad spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement plus extra folate, potassium, magnesium and iron.

I am intrigued that some people do 2 jabs a day. Is this two full 1mg jabs of hydroxocobalamin?

Do you have any links to people describing why they do this as I would li!e to consider it for myself to get a better overall effect .

I would like to understand the rationale for dividing the dose rather than doubling up an existing dose.

deniseinmilden profile image
deniseinmilden in reply toTiredo

Yes, either 2x 1mg in 1ml or 2x 1.5mg in 1ml.

I think it's to try to utilise as much as possible of what you inject and to try to even out the effects.

The people I know belong to a Facebook PA/B12 deficiency support group but whenever I have posted links to it on here I find they always get broken, sorry.

Tiredo, the calculation of dosage is based on averages of how long people retain B12 and the fact that the higher your levels in serum the higher the rate at which it is removed.

People vary a lot in how they respond to B12 - both in terms of how quickly it is removed and also in terms of whether or not they respond to high serum B12 by trying to shut down the mechanism that allows B12 to go from blood to cells which can be countered by keeping levels in serum B12 much higher. This means that people vary a lot in where they need serum B12 levels to be post loading doses and some of us need levels that are permanently well above the measurable range - as soon as it starts dropping below whatever our personal tipping point is then we start to feel symptoms coming back.

Fortunately there is no known toxicity from B12 - even when used (hydroxocobolamin) in doses 5000 x the amount used to treat absorption problems to treat cyanide poisoning

Hello Gambit,

Please can you give me links where I can read up about this? I am trying to workout a reasonable balance.

are you looking for material on length of time it takes to remove B12 or for information on functional B12 deficiency, or both?

Length of time it takes to remove b12? Thanks for such a quick reply.

Martyn Hooper has published a few books on B12 - both of which look at the scientific evidence around how long B12 is actually retained by people eg Pernicious Anaemia - The Forgotten Disease
