Yes, I tried betaine.HCl tablets and they worked. But I found it difficult to hit on the right dose. For most meals one tablet worked OK if I took it partway through the meal. But sometimes (mainly when I was going out to a restaurant) I'd get the old symptoms back (diarrhoea attack at about 04:00 in the morning).

So I started taking two tablets sometimes, just to be sure. Then I had an attack of really bad symptoms that I recognised from when I'd had food poisoning in Egypt. Then they gave me powerful antibiotics that killed all my gut bacteria.

I'm certain that taking too much betaine.HCl had produced the same outcome - that I'd killed all my gut bugs. It got fixed by taking some expensive probiotics (Symprove).

Now I take about 40 ml of lime juice with each meal, in a glass or orange juice, tonic water or in a gimlet. It's much easier to adjust the dose, taking more for a bifpg three-course meal, less for a snack, and it seems to work just as well.

Hi do you use fresh squeezed? I’ve never seen it at a store.

I buy it six litres at a go from Amazon - Chef's Larder is the brand.

Hi CarrieD2018. Good advice from fbirder about the Symrpove and lime juice. Many here report that it works for them - and it did for me.

A note of caution about HCL - this is contraindicated if you have active gastritis or stomach ulcers - it's literally pouring acid on open wounds, will prevent healing, potentially cause ulcers to bleed. And apart from that, it would hurt like Horace 😖.

Hope you find something that works for you 👍

Definitely try probiotics , the best and cheapest being home-made fermented foods ( organic uncooked sauerkraut) This will encourage good bacteria in your stomach , aiding digestion .

Thanks all..have started taking lime juice with meals and if I'm out orange juice. I've always taken probiotics but will look for this brand. Happy Sunday 😀
