Hi Lorna59.
The short answer is that once a sterile seal has been broken and vitamin B12 drawn up in a syringe, it should be used immediately and not stored for later use.
The reason for this is that once the sterile seal is broken, the B12 is no longer stored in a sterile environment and is thus subject to the potential for contamination...even when stored in a syringe.
Not sure what your source is or what you're using, but it’s always best to use single dose ampoules for injection and draw them up into the syringe at the time of injection.
Some B12 comes in multi-dose bottles (these usually have a metal seal and a rubber bung in the top, through which you insert the needle to withdrawn a single dose - of B12 for injection). Once the first dose of B12 is withdrawn from the multi-dose vial, most manufacturers advise that the vial has to be discarded after 28 days (even if there is B12 left inside it). This is because the anti-microbials that are added to keep the B12 'bug' free are only guaranteed to work for twenty-eight days once the sterile seal has been broken (this happens the first time a needle is inserted to withdraw the first injection of B12).
Storing B12 in a syringe for injection at a later date is not safe: the B12 has been 'released' from the sterile environment it was stored in and is thus potentially open to contamination (even though the syringe was sterile, it's not once opened - and likewise the needle - and the B12).
So...sorry...but I wouldn't advise anyone to store B12 in a syringe for injection at a later date.
👍
Why r u storing loaded syringes?
Ampules can be stored for a long time and have an expiry date.
You can store them in a cool cupboard or your refrigerator door until end of date.
It’s not a good idea to store filled syringes.
