Hello all, I'm popping over from my more usual haunt, the thyroid forum. I'm thinking of doing an Active B12 test in around a month's time (currently supplementing with 5,000 mcg sublingual tabs daily). How long before the test should I stop these to avoid skewing the results?
I had a B12 test a year ago (wasn't called 'active' at that point) which was rather low in range at 342.7 (191.00-663.00) and have been attempting to boost it ever since. Will be doing a folate/ferritin/active B12 combined test, not just B12 on its own.
There is, in fact, no reliable test according to the latest BMJ research document, (although it's believed deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebral spinal fluid below 550 pg/ml) so history and symptoms are paramount, especially if you are over 60 and also have autoimmune thyroid disease:
The findings in the above link highlighted an increased association of PA with other autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, vitiligo and in particular, Autoimmune Thyroid Disease . Atrophic Gastritis and autoimmune thyroid disease are closely linked with ATD being present in about 40% of ABG patients[41]. "These data suggest that, in patients with autoimmune disorders, in particular ATD, a possible association with PA should be suspected and excluded."
