Hi I am pleased to read everyone's posts and to be part of the PAS community. I have had B12 deficiency for a number of years now at least 10 years and never new this society existed. I went for blood tests yesterday to make sure my levels were okay as I have had a fluttery heart beat for the last month or so. I received a call from GP office today advising that I have to take folic acid 5mg tablets so it has been very interesting reading your comments on the subject. Hope this will explain the heart flutters too :)

Hi and welcome carolineamoon are you currently having regular B12 supplementation for your deficency?

There is a complex interaction between folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron. A deficiency of one may be "masked" by excess of another so the three must always be in balance.

Folic acid is crucial for proper brain functioning and plays an important role in mental and emotional health. It helps in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material, especially when cells and tissues are growing rapidly, such as during infancy, adolescence, and pregnancy. Folic acid works closely with vitamin B12 in making red blood cells and helps iron function properly in the body. Vitamin B9 works with vitamins B6 and B12 and other nutrients in controlling the blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine.

I'm not a medically trained person but there are others on here who will be able to give you good advice.

Are you in the U.K?

Hi Clivealive thanks for your support. Yes I regularly have a B12 injection every 12 weeks at my GP. Interesting that your point out Folic acid is crucial for proper brain functioning - I never connected my B12 deficiency with my bad memory until now. To be honest I have never connected a lot of my ailments to B12 deficiency until I read other posts on this site this evening. I am so relieved to be able to make sense of some issues that I have suffered in the past including chronic back pain and excruciating shooting pains in my legs. I look forward to reading more and understanding more about this illness.

A book well worth while the purchase is Martyn Hooper's "What you need to know about Pernicious Anaemia & Vitamin B12 Deficiency" available via Amazon - and no, I'm not on commission :)
