Would anyone know if there is a relationship between PA and GS, will having GS effect the storing or processing of hydroxocobalamin in the liver? Thanks

PA leads to a problem absorbing B12, which eventually leads to a deficiency. There are other things that can cause the absorption problem as well. The mechanism by which the body recycles B12 through the liver depends on the liver releasing B12 in bile back through the ileum. So, if you have an absorption problem you will also have a problem recycling B12 so basically you won't have B12 in the liver at all because the body will have responded to low levels by trying to release reserves which will just have passed through the guts and been wee-ed away by the kidneys, so in that sense GS is a bit irrelevant. Sounds as if GS only relates to one particular protein. There are lots of proteins involved in the full metabolism of B12 - not sure if bilirubin is one of these but if its associated with red blood cells then it probably isn't. Sorry but I'm not a biochemist so can't give you a definitive answer but in short I think that interaction betwen GS and PA is probably one thing that you don't have to worry about.

Thank you once again for putting my mind at rest.

I assume that the GS has just been diagnosed from high bilirubin? If so, there does seem to be a link between high bilirubin and coeliac disease. Have you been tested?

Yes, been tested, all ok! Had GS years before PA, having regular B12 now, bad days not so often! Thank you.

Hi Roblewis. i couldn't comment on the boo-chemistry of PA & GS. however, i 've got both so had my Mum. so perhaps, something to do with generic predisposition.

Thank you, I have PA as a result of being a vegetarian for a very long time! I was just wondering that as GS is a liver function problem, would it effect the processing of B 12.
