A leaky blood-brain barrier is a suspected cause of PD, especially among athletes in contact sports. If blood leaks into the brain, one would expect excess iron from hemoglobin in the brain. Excess iron is not the cause of a leaking blood-brain barrier. A low iron diet could be detrimental to people with PD. For example, green leafy vegetables are high in iron because of the chlorophyll. Eating these vegetables with chlorophyll raw can help remove heavy metals which can cause PD. We need research into the source of the iron in the brains with PD before drawing conclusions.

It appears that they detected the iron as an element through its magnetic properties without determining the chemical composition containing the iron. The chemical composition of the iron is a critical step to interpreting what the excessive iron means.
