Amantadine

Hi everyone,

What is the story with Amatadine? Has anybody tried this? If so, please share your experiences. I take Selegeline, which works pretty well but as it gets close to the time to take my dose I really know it; if not, I get pretty shakey. Also, I’m interested in the amount of years that people can still work after diagnosis. I know everyone is different but I’m 53 and I was hoping to work 8 more years as I will be vested and will be able to receive my retirement.

My husband had hallucinations with this medication, so we stopped it. He has not had any since. He can be sensitive to meds sometimes.

I’m 70. On rasagiline and 0 side effects since Jan 2017. Gave Amantadine a try a few months ago and had bad side effects. Headaches, however I’ve read that many do not experience side effects. My doc advised me such. Some do and some don’t. It took me a month to build up to full dose and yes it really helped with tremors.

i take amantadine 100mg 3x/day - 6am, 12pm, 4pm. it can cause insomnia, so thats why i dont take it later in the day. it has really helped with dyskinesias. ive never had tremors, so i cant comment on its effect on them. i dont have any adverse effects from it.

My morning dose of amantadine works pretty well as it reliefs my tremors and my dyskinesia not fully but helps, but the afternoon dose doesn't seem to do much.

It helped me a great deal with my stiffness. I take it twice a day after breakfast and lunch. It was originally an antiviral med and I noticed I wasn’t Ill as much last winter. No real side effects other than trouble falling asleep if taken later in the day.

Hi Dana,

I was diagnosed nine years ago and I am still working. I take sinamet 25/100 every 2 hours and Amantadine twice a day to try to get the dopamine to last more. It helps the effect is very minimal in my case.

Like you said, each one of us is different but I believe that it is very possible to keep your job for 8 more years.

I’m also taking sinemet every 2 hours and about to try amandatine. Would u mind sharing how many pills u take every 2 hrs? I’m having to take 2 to 2-1-2 and it seems like a lot...thanks!

Amantadine gave me relief from tremors, but resulted in extreme stuttering and inability to speak. Also, gave me balance issues. Not trying to scare you, but letting you know so that you can recognize the cause if you see it.

As for work, I am still working 7 years after diagnosis, but it has it's challenges. Stress takes an additional toll and meditation helps. Your doctor may also prescribe antidepressants.

Good luck. All is not lost. There is abundant Life after Parkinson's diagnosis.
