Neuro patch

My Doctor suggested I try the neuro patch. I am not currently taking anything. A lot of exercise has helped and diet but starting to need something else. Anyone else tried this? Co-pay is $90 to its expensive. Praying for everyone I believe prayer works. Happy Easter.

The neupro patch is a dopamine agonist. Other popular agonists are Ropinerole and Mirapex both short and long acting. The patch is the newest so the most expensive. There isnt alot to choose between them I dont think though Im sure you will hear the range of reaction. Agonists work for some and others really dislike them.

Dear Cshamb,

My husband has been diagnosed with a condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) which displays some signs similar to Parkinson's.

At this stage he takes a large arrange of medication - including Madopar in many different forms - slow release tablets, some dissolved in water (dispersable) for immediate response to stop paralysis and the latest he is on are patches as well. As I understand the patches are designed to give a regulated dose and help with the freezing that my husband suffers from and to give him continued independence (at night time he suffers from solid rigidity and with it it brings on an understandable fear). For that the patches seem to be of great aid and comfort.

I am not keen on any of the dopamine agonists because of the side effects they can cause - however at the end of the day - I am not the one with Parkinson's (or a Parkinson-ism type illness) so I guess it's all down to seeking opinions, monitoring, regulating and making the most of what life has to offer.

Regards,

Alana - Western Australia

I use a 24/8mg Neupro patch daily at first I had a very hard time with my skin not liking the patch so now I use shoulder to shoulder this works well, my skin was so sensitive. This patch helped me not have to take more pills it replaced the Mirapex which had some nasty side effects. I find it odd that a doctor would start you on a patch vs a pill of Sinement . But I m not a doctor. I also believe in Prayer and it does work, If it wasn't for my faith, family & friends would have never been able to walk this path of Parkinson. Happy Easter to you also. God bless!

Thanks for your reply. You mentioned that it was odd to start on the patch and I wondered why that was odd.

The patches must have improved much, the medicine it releases is slowed for 24 hr relief, I had PD before the patches were tweeked. I had also thought pills worked faster that is all. It s great to just be able to use a patch and no pillls!

My neuro recommended the neupro patch also. I am waiting. If and when I must take a med due to severity of symptoms, for the patch to transition to a generic. It will be much less costly. That may take two or three years yet.

i got up to 8mg but developed incredible pain on the back of the right leg and i can barely walk. my dr said it is side effect and i stopped using it. it sticks better if you wipe the skin with alcohol an let it dry before applying the patch. i am in US and i got sample for 1mg from my dr. in the sample there was a coupon that i show to the pharmacist. it allows me to get the patches of my dosage for $10 a month for a year.

The neupro discount card is only good if you don't get any assistance paying for meds or are on Medicare. BUT the 10.00 monthly co pay was wonderful I used the card for 2 yrs, now I m on medicare.
