How Dr Bortan's patients deal with constipation:

One cup of oat bran

One cup of applesauce

One cup of prune juice

Mixed together and refrigerate.

One tablespoon once daily She said more than one per day WILL cause the opposite condition.

Your neurologist is obviously not a nutritionist. Applesauce and prune juice are very high in sugar which is bad for the brain. Sorry to be a party pooper. Do you take magnesium? I tablespoon of MCT oil a day and your problem will likely be solved.

Thanks for the note. I checked the ingredients. The ingredients in oat bran is oat bran. The ingredients in prune juice is dried prunes and water. I can make applesauce using apples, cinnamon and water with a Ninja blender. Sugars from fruit are slow to be absorbed due to the fiber. Also I believe insulin isn't involved.

I am stricter than most and I forget that sometimes. Only fruit I eat is dark berries and occasionally apple skins in a green smoothie. Anyways, I highly recommend MCT oil for constipation. I use the Garden of Life MCT oil. Prebiotic vegetables that ferment in the colon can ease constipation but in a more gradual way. If you want to solve the problem asap, MCT. Don't plan on leaving the house that day! No joke! And the MCT oil is very good for the brain.

I put 1 T MCT oil each morning in my coffee for brain health but it does nothing for my constipation. I need magnesium for that.

in reply togaga1958

Google MCT and constipation. Well documented that it helps. There are warnings to start slow bc it “helps” too much.

You will want to use Mag CITRATE, the other forms are not as active as the Citrate ..

What brand do you use? Does it need to be refrigerated?

cclemonade says he gets his from Garden of Life. I use Brain Octane C8 by Bullet Proof. Bullet Proof has a website or its also on Amazon. I make the Bullet Proof coffee recipe every morning if you're interested in keto. Go to Bullet Proof's web to read the benefits. Mine does not need to be refrigerated.

There is a difference in C8, C10, and C12 types that you can read about and decide which you want.

I think MCT helps with the plumbing with most people. Maybe its because i've used it for so many years that my body is used to it and I'd need to up the dose if that was my goal but i use for brain health and magnesium for plumbing.

FWIW, my recipe for avoiding constipation is 500 mg thiamine HCL morning and afternoon and 5 to 10 g of vitamin C in drink over the course of the day.

I just looked up info on MCT oil again to refresh my memory. What I found advises starting slow with MCT oil bc it HAS SUCH A STRONG LAXATIVE AFFECT. (Sorry for obnoxious all caps; want to make sure it’s not missed). I found it so helpful. And, perhaps it was just a coincidence but my trembling hands reduced trembling when I started it. I did not have a big tremor, not regularly anyways, but it was more than a twitch, my whole hand trembled. After starting MCT oil it stopped. I could stop the MCT oil and see if the tremble returns but I’m scared to bc it feels like a miracle and I don’t want to risk any changes. I swear, MCT = Happy Poop

And buy a Squatty Potty

yes, i've read that before. i've been taking it so long that I'd likely just need to up the dose to have that benefit. or my plumbing could be worse off than yours lol Also has done nothing for my tremor but again maybe a dose increase would help. It makes me feel so not hungry that i dont increase or I'd have no appetite. Does it affect you that way?

in reply togaga1958

Yes. It definitely is an appetite suppressant. Are you doing keto? I was. I took a break to feed my body with prebiotics but I intend to resume keto. I still have a lot to learn but I do think it has helped me. How about you?

What is your dosage of MCT that relieved your tremor?

The MCT I have is a mix of C8 and C10. How does that compare with what you are taking?

what are you using for prebiotics other than the foods that are considered prebiotic? yes, i try to do the keto diet but my down fall is fruit. i have a hard time giving that up-pears, watermelon, grapes etc I need to do keto to help me with my blood sugar level and A1C and how it helps the brain with the good fats. I'll do good for a while and then the peaches will come to market, lol

I dont really need it for weight loss but i know it helps that.

Bullet Proof website is a good source to read

Just my two cents: PD affects the entire GI tract, from the esophagus to the rectum. For me food sits in my stomach seemingly forever.

The neuro pushes water. Nearly a gallon a day. Constipation is the result of not having enough fluid in the unabsorbed digestum as it fills the rectum. The colon's job is to absorb the water leaving a solid stool. But it can overdo it leading to stools like granite.

So in a healthy person water may be the solution. But not so for those with PD? For me I seem to need fiber to retain enough fluid for passing stools without teeth-clenching movements.

I use fruit as meals. The water in the fruit is absorbed but the fiber in the fruit isn't. That's probably how prunes help. The pulp is digested slowly meaning some makes it to the colon.

Two things worked well for my constipation issues. First was eating a ton of Greek yogurt which worked well. Second, I am now taking a probiotic pill with every meal...this is working like you would never believe.

in reply to

Do you have a specific probiotic you like?

in reply to

I use three different kinds....a different one with each meal.

(1) Bio-Kult Advanced Probiotics -14 Strains, Probiotic Supplement, Probiotics for Adults, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, No Need for Refrigeration, Non-GMO;

(2) Thorne Research - FloraPro-LP Probiotic - Acid-Resistant L. Plantarum Pearls for Easy Dosing - 60 Pearl Tablets; and

(3) Garden of Life Whole Food Probiotic Supplement - Primal Defense Ultra Ultimate Probiotic Dietary Supplement for Digestive and Gut Health, 90 Vegetarian.
