anyone undergone,"long stem spinal fixation" ... - Pain Concern
anyone undergone,"long stem spinal fixation" for scoliosis,I am 70yrs old and have been given this option
Hello Jax
This is quite a heroic surgery, I have not had this done, although some in pain clinic had this done, it can be beneficial in what context are you having it done
BOB
not sure you mean,by,in what context.
have had debilitating pain and loss of mobility for 5yrs,up until now after trying everything, was told surgery not possible, but now have been referred to a spinal unit nr London, operation takes all day and 4months recovery,Ijust wonder if spinal boness are dense enough to take lots of screws into long metal rod.
Hi There, yes, I am 51 and had this surgery done when I was 19. They inserted two rods alongside my spine and wired on each vertebrae. It is all still intact today. It has not kept me from anything...skiing, golf, kickboxing, running, anything..well, except I cannot do a backbend anymore. But, I really don't want to either! I had a 65 degree angle on top of my S curve and a 45 degree angle on the bottom. Walked out of the hospital 2 inches taller. Now, I know the surgery they do now is way more advanced. I don't believe the long rods are still used. I have had doctors chuckle when they see my xrays because they are so ancient looking. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Hi Jax, Just come across your question. I wondered if it worked for you. I am in constant pain from scoliosis and am also 70. Saw a ortho consultant and he said he wouldn't do it at my age! How did you manage to get someone to see you at a London hospital? I really need help. I feel like giving up. Sorry for all the questions.
