Lower back pain

Hi all.

Hope you’re all okay. I’ve been struggling today with really bad lower back pain. When I walk (all be it in a strange way) it’s fine. When I sit it’s fine. Just when I try and bend and when I try and get up. It’s literally pain from one area a 3inch diameter circle just above the buttocks.

I fell asleep earlier in a strange position and woke up with cramp which has gone now though. I’ve used ibuprofen gel that I have.

Anyone got any advice on easing the pain? I would greatly appreciate this pain going.

Thank you.

Ash

The best way of easing the pain is understanding the causes, Do you bend or lift heavy weights. Is your bed getting old, over say ten years old, How are you sitting, at night or at work, Do you slouch when walking, Consider hip pain and its cause. If your pain has been for several days it may be down to what you have been doing, even posture can cause back pain

Have you talked to your Doctor for prescribed medications. If the pain is chronic Tens machines work on the gate principle and can suppress pains throughout the body. I have used a TENS for thirty years and it does work well. There are many sorts now including Pain Pens that may help also new smaller TENS that are a single channel and work on one area, Check various chemists and specialist Companies, I use BODY CLOCK on the Internet.

Try working out the cause before making life complicated, if the pain last for a few weeks talk to your GP, either a phone appointment or eye to eye

Sometimes exercise can really help.

Hey Bob. Thanks for the reply. I was looking at a tens machine. It’s only recently that cardio has passed me off as no longer having a heart condition. So I can now use one

If you purchase on get it from a company who specialises in this type of equipment the best ones are twin channel tens, although the new Digital ones are quite interesting for the right patient. Get the machine with multypil band -with and treatment programs, with a timer. In pain clinic they suggested using the machine for longer than shown on the machine, changing the frequency as you use it, or the next time you need treatment prevents people becoming used to the treatment The machines with above normally costs about sixty/80 pounds and if you are disabled you can get the VAT refunded.

If you are been treated at hospital/ pysio etc they may offer you a free basic machine, in fact I was given a twin channel machine so they can explain its use.

Do you take paracetamol? The best way to take it is four times a day every day, because it builds up and works better that way. Don't just take one or two doses when it becomes painful because it won't work. Paracetamol can be taken both with ibuprofen, and ibuprofen gel.

Hello I had pain as you described periodically for 30 years in the sacro iliac area. Diclofenac which is now banned used to cure it temporarily. The Indians used to feed it to cows (this is all true) when the cows died naturally the Indians left them to be eaten by buzzards and the residual diclofenac killed the buzzards so it was banned. Diclofenac never caused me any harm and you can still buy it if you shop around. As I got older I shrank and this stopped the back pain. However recently the pain has returned but I think this is part of several aches and pains . Try ibubrofen as a gel but it must be the strong variety. I can't remember the w/w mix. I can agree with the other advice contributed.

Difficult to say without knowing what’s actually wrong. Back pain has manycauses. You don’t want to do anything that makes it worse! The position you describe sounds as if it might be the SI joint area, which can be very painful as there are so many nerves. I suffer a lot with backpain, for various reasons but I do have a simple emergency routine which may or may not work, but at best it eases things off & at worst it makes you rest & it does no further harm. First I ask myself what kind of pain is it? Is it a dull ache, a throbbing pain, or a sharp shooting pain? Is it very localised or is the pain radiating? Does it just happen when I move a certain way? are my muscles going into spasms? Or does it feel like I’ve put something out? Is the area hot or warm to the touch? What was I doing when it came on? Does it feel muscular or something else? My basic first aid routine is that if the area is warm or hot to touch, this indicates inflammation & swelling. In this case put an ice pack on the area (bag of frozen peas in tea towel is good, or ice cubes in a freezer bag wrapped in tea towel) for 10 minutes at a time every couple of hours, finishing on ice. Let the skin warm up gradually. If you are in a lot of pain rest on the bed as well in a comfortable position, but get up every hour or so & gently move around forv10 mins or so. This will stop you stiffening up. Drink lots of water. Take anti inflammatories eg ibuprofen regularly through the day, do not take on an empty stomach, & do not exceed recommended dosage. Do all this for the 1st 24 hours. On the second day do 3 mins each of ice (as above) followed immediately by a hot water bottle. Do this for 15 mins 3 times per day. This increases blood circulation in the area which helps flush out the inflammation. Good to maybe get up & gently walking round the house after doing this to also help with the circulation. Keep taking the pills, water & rest, but getting up to move around a bit. On 3rd day you should be ok to just use a hot water bottle, this will help loosen tight muscles & will feel comforting. You could also try gently massaging the area with oil too. A little Olive oil will do, or sweet almond or arnica oil. Arnica cream is good to massage in too. If i’m still in agony after all this I go & see my remedial deep tissue massage therapist. I swear by it. And you don’t want the pain to become chronic. Some injuries just need some proper hands on treatment or adjustments. Doctors aren’t very helpful in this regard but can give you pain meds. Everyone’s back is different, but the above routine helps me in the initial stages. It’s also good to feel you are taking control a bit. Good luck & be gentle with yourself.

Hi all

Thank you for your replies.

The pain in the back seems to have fully healed now with rest and ibuprofen gel. The issue I have now is that it has left a pain in The back of my lower thigh. Now the pain isn’t unbearable it’s just annoying. It goes when I bend my leg but is there when I straighten it. It’s like a cramp but it’s not unbearable. Has this happened to anyone else before.

in reply to Asherleymoco

It sounds like the pain is coming from a trapped nerve, try applying heat with a warm compress , Some manipulations may also help. Have words with your GP. If something has not move over an extended period or has moved or stressed that may cause pain From back to thigh, the area is a complex area with a rich blood supply, and all those nerves that travel down the leg. Talk to your Doctor, you may need to consider blood supply, Nerves and Tendons as well

Hey there sorry to hear about your condition. I also experience kind of the same problem due to the desk job after my office shifted to work from home platform. I experience pain in the lower back and also in the middle of the spine. I was not able to sit or lie down properly as getting up would start to be difficult after a while. I am now in physiotherapy treatment(dynamicphysiotherapy.ca/ser... and it has been of great relief for me as I was in the state of continuous work pre and post-pandemic.

Along with the treatment, I have been recommended certain steps to reduce the level of pain such as keeping the body in the proper upright posture and taking walks every hr or two to lower the strain in the back and spine. Stretching muscles every now and then to relax and for more flexibility and most importantly to sleep on your side and not on your back which can reflect the most giving good results. If the pain is severe, try putting ice or heat packs which can give relief.

I suggest you consult a physiotherapist for better recommendations and for proper treatment or follow these steps to lower the chances of back pain.
