Yes. Well, it doesn't make the pain worse, it makes you think your pain is worse.
They think what happens is that the opioids including codeine, when taken for a period of time, increases pain sensitivity which makes it seem that the codeine isn't working anymore. Some people then think that their pain is getting worse, when in fact it is the codeine that has made them more sensitive to the pain. This is why opioids are only supposed to be used for a short period of time, and were originally meant to be used for acute episodes or end of life care.
