Sciatica? When 12 weeks pregnant...

putmebacktogether profile image

Hi all, I had back problems last year (see my old post) & this forum was amazing, I now see a McTimoney Chiropractor & am doing even better than before.

I am now pregnant. (13 weeks today!) I informed my chiro some weeks ago (no treatment whilst pregnant yet) & he said to return to him once I’m in my 4th-5th month, so I’m returning at the end of March.

However, for the last few weeks I’ve been really struggling in bed, with what I think is sciatica? Had a tiny few back niggles (to be expected right!) but calmed with hot water bottle.

It is worse on my left side. Feels nervy. Pain goes down side of my leg. Wakes me up with it. I should mention since going through my back issues I still have (very mild) tingles in my feet at times, probably mostly left & they can usually be quite cold. I’m not diabetic. I’m now getting sciatica on my right side. So either side can wake me up!

Sorry for going on, just wanted to build up my history!

Any advice gratefully received on what I can do to relieve this? I’m keeping active (walking)

Thank you!

Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch, and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Apologies to hear about the pain you are experiencing. It is beneficial that you are keeping active, as this can be a great benefit to reducing pain and keeping your mind distracted from this. In addition to this, it is good to try and carry on with your life as you would without experiencing pain, attempting to not let this affect you greatly.

It would be advised to also contact your GP regarding the pain you are experiencing just so they can check this out and try and diagnose the reason for the pain and try and help to ease this, especially with your new pregnancy.

Please do get in touch if you have any more queries or concerns

This happened to me as I gained so much weight all in front. My chiro adjusted my position on table to accommodate my expanding belly... lol

Have you tried water exercises while pregnant? It takes the weight off sciatic and allows muscles to be stretch/exercised. A massage is also lovely while pregnant as it helps sore muscles reacting to your changing shape, change in centre of gravity etc.

Just relax when needed with feet up, walk slowly when you feel you can. Listen to your body as it knows best imo. Taking care of you is best. 😊🌷
