Sorry you’ve had no replies to this but on the other hand it might not help you much if you did.
Lots of people will have had this surgery, some will have had varying degrees of success (however you measure that) and others, not so much.
I haven’t had a micro-discetomy (I had different surgery x 2 laminectomies) and I really didn’t have much choice as I couldn’t move my legs at the time and was in 24/7 pain. The surgery I had was worth having, but it has been a long recovery and wasn’t a total fix, better than nothing though. For me.
I would suggest that being concerned is completely understandable and normal and that if you have questions about the procedure your medical team are the people to talk to. Apart from that you could do some research into the procedure itself and find out what the risk vs benefit profile is. Some people want to know as much as possible before hand, others might prefer to rely on the information your surgeon provides. We’re all different in how we handle things like this.
Nobody can tell you with any certainty how you will get on unfortunately. All procedures carry risk, spinal ones carry considerable risk, but that’s true of any spinal surgery or even less invasive procedures such as injections.
Those that wake up pain free (surgery pain aside) will likely say it was worth it, those that had less favourable outcomes will likely say not to risk it. But nobody can tell you whether to do it or not.
Given your situation with the children (and I understand to a degree as I am main carer for our two 9 + 7 although without the added complication of having special needs), I would assume that your surgeon would not have recommended surgery if they didn’t have a degree of confidence that it would help.
I truly hope it works out for you, it’s a horrible situation to be in.
As previously said all surgery carries risk but so does crossing the road. This surgery is minimally invasive and gives an almost instantaneous cure. My husband was petrified but is now a total convert. It is really good and is so easy to recover from. So stop worrying and trust your surgeon if you don’t trust him get a second opinion.
