Hello everyone.

I was diagnosed with neuropathy in my right leg and foot two years ago ,since then I've been prescribed with various nerve medication and have encountered various problems with them all most did nothing for the pain some had bad side effects. The only one that gave me any slight relief was Duluxotine but I had problems urinating. The pain clinic took me off them and tried other nerve medication without any success .On my last visit to the pain clinic they decided to try a different route and prescribed Nefopam apparently a pain killer. One of the side effects is difficulty urinating. After a week taking them I found great difficulty peeing,I made an appointment with my GP the following week and explained my problem. He looked it up and agreed it was aside effect of Nefopam and it clearly stated I should see my GP if this happened. His advice was to drink more water and told me to come back if I could not urinate at all. I was quite taken aback I continued with the medication for another week drinking more water but the problem only got worse.I think maybe my GP thinks I'm messing him about.I'm running out medication to to take and my pains are no better.

The issue with nerve pain is well known and if you get a drug which works, then ask the doctors to see if your able to use a catheter, I use four each day now due to the pain and the medication , better to do that then struggle with pain.

I took that drug before the doctors decided to give me an implanted morphine pump and now I take break through Morphine , I damaged the nerves in my legs and my spine after an accident, four years ago I lost the use of my bladder. But I was struggling with urination due to the medication, they said only think left is to user Catheters

Hi bobknod51, ye medication do have side effects as you have described, however if you are 51 years young just ask your GP to do a simple blood test called CRP, if it is above a normal level you could have a problem with your prostate. Lots of people call it prostrate which means your body is in the laying position. You could have what is called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) Symptoms are problems urinating , when you do go it is intermittent, you stop and start, you have poor flow. You never feel as if you have emptied your bladder. You dribble after urinating, you need to go to the toilet several times per night. You get urgency to urinate.

There is also a simple test that the GP can do to check if the prostate is large, normal size or smaller. It could be a bit bumpy and irregular in shape.

Not all people get the side effects of all the medication that they are taking. If they do get all the side effects then the side effects would make them more ill than the illness thy are being treated for.

Also a lot of people read the information leaflet from back to front so many times that they read in to their illness the side effects too.

If you are worried go back to the GP and ask him to check the CRP and get them to perform a small rectal test a lubricated finger inserted into the rectum, when you lay on your left hand side on the couch. It is sometimes a little uncomfortable but it is done very quickly and the GP can tell you if the prostate is normal or not. Best regards Oldman1952
