Duloxetine is an anti depressant that is also useful to treat pain. It is taken like an anti depressant, every day, rather than an as and when painkiller. You must take as per the label, as prescribed by Dr. Hope this helps.

Its also a med that needs to be tapered off slowly if you decide to come off it, as it can cause awful mental and physical withdrawal symptoms, so definitely don't stop and start it randomly.

Thanks Earthwitch. My gp prescribed it but I don't want to take it. Had a higher dose of the same thing and was totally out of it for a whole weekend.

How long did it take for you to taper off? Thanks.

Hi I am prescribed duloxtine and you are supposed to take it as per prescribed by doctor. I had been taking it in the morning as squeak has indicated, I also read the leaflet that comes with the meds. I am now taking at night as I am not sleeping anyway and wanted to see if it makes any difference. I missed one dose so I didn't double up on the switch over. Still not sleeping, speaking to my doc on Thursday as I'm about to run out. I'm not sure if she will increase the dosage or try me on something else.

As others have stated it is an anti-depressant - takes a week or two to fully work - it needs to be taken everyday - I take this as a painkiller.

beaton in reply toAmyPS

Hi Amy,yes thanks for your reply. I have been prescribed it as a painkiller, first at 30 mg. and now at 20 mg.But I don't want to take it. Firstly because of the adverse reactions I had on 30 mg. and secondly I don't want a drug I have to take continuously. x

I know what you mean, I had a bad reaction to Codeine, Amitryptaline, Gabapentin, Naproxen and a few others (seems I've worked my way through them).

It may help you. My girlfriend has MS and takes it, I can work for you like Lyrica, Pregbalin, does for Fibromyalgia Patients, or it can do for you as it did for me cause leg Pain. But don't worry about that my left leg, the one that hurt, is far from Nomal. It was degloved, and mauled fleshless when a 24, 000 LB Bus disagreed with its presence in a crosswalk, The Bus Won and The Leg Lost. You'll be fine. Enjoy its benefits and Never get into a territorial dispute with a Bus

Hi Beaton,

I have been taking it for 6 months without any problems at 30mg x2 daily. Started at 20 mg and went up over a month. It is supposed to work on the pain centre. It is also prescribed for urinary incontinence. It gave me a headache which eventually went away but it also lifted a depressive and anxious mood I've had for years which other antidepressants failed to do. It hasn't altered the pain just my relationship with it. It's still there but I feel less bothered by it. No one likes the thought of taking pills but sometimes they can be lifesaving. It hasn't made me dull in the head either as far as I can tell.

Thanks squeaky for the tip! I was gradually coming to that conclusion myself and so have been trying to take my second dose before 8pm which seems to work.

Best wishes

I'm glad to pass it on

It took a Few days till I got use to taking it in the morning but after that I have not looked back and if in doubt ask a good pharmacist I did and he said defo am, and if you suffer side effects which I don't but he said speak to gp about having one dose in morning and lunchtime divide the dose . I take it for pain and I suppose the depression eases as it helps pain but I have been on 120 mg . Also I craved certain foods because of it , honest you would be very surprise how long you can survive on yogurts and rice pudding for lol xx

Take care everyone

You should take it as per the prescription of your physician because your physician knows you better than anybody else who is giving you the suggestion here.

beaton profile image
beaton in reply toangelrobert

Sorry I don't agree angelrobert. Yes my gp knows me but he doesn't know the pain or adverse side effects I suffer, where these good people have been there.Plus doctors get paid more by the NHS for prescribing antidepressants.

angelrobert profile image
angelrobert

Yeah, it is the point I agree but still there are some precautions and you should concern about your health.

beaton profile image
beaton in reply toangelrobert

Yes angelrobert,I think from a personal point that I would prefer to take a painkiller only where the need is great than pump myself full of drugs on the off chance.xx

Yeah, I just want to make this point clear. Thanks Beaton

It is an antidepressant and has to be taken every day as far as I know.....aids Neuro Transmitters to cope with long term pain.... Takes cpl of Wks to start working properly and if u stop taking it cold turkey without assisted reduction it will give you nasty side effects....or it does with me when I run out. Good luck.
