I have numbness then pain in the upper section of my right thumb. I am right handed. It started just under a week ago.

A week is not classed as suffering chronic pain.

Presume you have visited your GP and what did he say?

I had numbness and pain in my thumb and pain down my shoulder and arm, my GP sent me for an Xray and in the end it was a trapped nerve in my neck. I took anti inflammatory drugs and stopped doing things that aggravated it and it got better. I hope yours does.

Another reason, although you may have already thought of this is how much you have used your thumb for work. I currently have a numb thumb on my right hand too, which started last monday (not saying its chronic) but I thought that the reasoning for it is that I have been writing too much in a short amount of time thus creating a numb thumb. I havent got the feeling back in my thumb, but hopefully it will return soon.
