Hi Nedd, I've just had some work in an exhibition for the Sea of Lights festival at Lancing, which is a local Christmas festival that has just started up. I can't work out how to post more than one image at a time so if you would like to see more let me know. For this series I was interested in the interplay between light and shadow within the context of the Christmas festival, light being such an integral part of the Christmas story with Jesus being the Light of the world. Each individual piece creates its own mood and aura depending upon where it is placed and under what conditions it is lit, from the really subtle fuzzy light of overcast weather to the stark contrast and intense shadow play of a bright sunny day. I really like the idea of them being a form of very slow kinetic art, revealing new truths as the day goes on, a constant interplay between the fabric and its shadows where the shadows themselves can take centre-stage over the structure and vice versa.
Far from the traditional notion of crochet squares and blankets, my work pushes the boundaries of the craft not just technically but also conceptually (no Granny squares here! :-)). I am fascinated by the complexity and versatility of crochet as a sculptural medium and concept, for me it is the perfect medium for creating hyperbolic forms in imitation of natural structures. More than just the usual frictions between Craft and Art I think crochet has a uniquely undervalued representation in our culture. The exquisiteness of some traditional Irish lace for example is completely unheard of these days, so I guess I'm on a bit of a mission to redress the balance.
I can't really emphasize enough what a difference it's made to my life finding something productive to do that seems to bring joy in to other peoples lives. It definitely saved my sanity.
