Knee replacement
Hi mac gill,
I'm 10.5 months post op for TKR & have to say I'm STILL recovering What I've learnt during this process is that no 2 people will recover in the same way. Some are up & running quickly & others are taking the tortoise route!
Hi there, I had a total knee replacement last April and found the recovery to be quite quick, I was back at work in three weeks, BUT I WAS BEING FERRIED TO WORK WHICH IS DESK BASED AND MY COLLEGUES WERE BRILLIANT DOING ALL THE RUNNING FOR ME!!. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE SHOULD DO THIS, THE PHYSIO WAS QUITE ALARMED WITH ME.
I found very few problems with recovery, as long as you do the physio, The swelling has only just gone completely five months later, I did find the knee more painful than the hip replacement I had the year before but I was only taking paracetamol after 10 days, everyone is different I hope you have as good a recovery as I did,
Hello Bob here
Recovery times can speculative, so you will need to talk with GP
Good luck
BOB
My Mother had very poor results in her early 70's. Effectively it failed by 18 months, (very difficult revision surgery by 3 years), and even though her second was less problematic, she never regained good function and her walking was as poor after as it had been before, although pain less
Even though not all as bad as her, results generally don't seem to be in the same league as hip replacement unfortunately.
i have had 2 total knee replacements, the first one was pretty good after 6 months but to feel very good nearly normal 12 months the 2 nd was about the same, the most important factor is doing the exercises that you are told to do and putting in the required effort.
Hi Many thanks for all your replies. I also have spinal canal stenosis, arthritis in my other knee and my hands. I am struggling with the pain in these other areas, I guess from putting strain on them with the walking sticks. I had my op at the famous Tameside General Hospital and must say that the nursing treatment I received was on the whole good. I was put on the enhanced recovery programme and was out of bed the day after the op. A diary was supplied telling us what would happen day by day. Unfortunately this was a waste of time ie. day of operation out of bed, day after operation bandage and dressing removed, ice packs supplied etc. etc The only ice which I was during my stay was in the water which was supplied to drink and I had to ask 3 times during the day after my operation for the dressing and bandage to be removed only for it to be removed 3 days post op.GP hasn't been much use either. My husband had to take in a copy of my discharge meds for them to supply me with Ibuprofen, he took it on Thursday, I finally got my prescription the following Monday.
Spoke to the receptionist again yesterday after a particularly bad night with back pain and leg pain, asked her to see if I could have anything stronger than the meds which I am taking (2 x 50mg Tramadol 4 times a day, 2 x 500mg paracetamol 4 times a day and 1 x 400mg ibuprofen 4 times daily) . She had a word with my GP who said that these tablets should be enough for my pain and to phone back on Monday to make an appointment for a meds review. What do I do? I have an appointment with Salford Royal Hospital next Wednesday for my back problems so I should have a bit more idea what they are going to do the,.Meanwhile, I will "keep taking the tablets" sleep when I can and "smile and wave" Take care everyone
Not long any more. Like 3-4 months. Most important thing, is do that physical therapy. That's the key. Ny daughter is physical therapist. Do it for you.. And you won't regret it.
