Would belly dancing help with my back pain. tried nhs physio, that didnt really help. Need to meet new people, feel a bit low with the pain.

I have 3 discs in my lower back that have torn and leaked. So not got much movement.

Sadly I do not know what your condition is, so cannot advise, when I went to night clubs in Middle East it helped me for the wrong reasons, not been politically correct., If you need support you will get plenty here

Hi suzyq, belly dancing wouldn't be my first choice. Lol. But you never know until you try! It might help lighten your mood coz its certainly jolly and with constant back pain life can get miserable so why not give it a go and see what happens. Best wishes

Hello, I have tried a class a while ago, and it was great fun. The teacher did say that people do often join a group for health reasons. The music is great, and the movements quite simple and gentle. Also, it completely takes your mind off whatever troubles you in life, and mixing with others is good for this. I would give it a go!

Welcome along Suzyq. We don't always have the answers but the support from others is brilliant. Sometimes it helps just having another person who understands what you are going through.

With belly dancing, although gentle, there are short, frequent rapid movements of the hips. This may agravate your pain. It may be better to do some pilates to get some movement in the spine, then try the dancing.

Also, try and find a teacher who understands back problems, who can perhaps help you to use the movements as an exercise routine. And who is not so concerned that you keerp up with the rest of the class, but lets you trundle along at your own speed.

It is fun, I did it many moons ago.

Go for it! The music and the people will lift your spirits. Go at your own pace, you will soon see if it gets too much. I have never tried it but just reading about it has made me smile and think all Eastern colours and music. Have fun. Ann

As some of these very positive comments suggest, the music, coloured scarves (with jingly coins) and the 'fun' of the other members, will indeed lift your spirits. Teachers generally state that people only do what they can manage, and it really doesn't matter - you are there just to have fun. In addition, most groups have a troupe who go out and about to events, and going along (to watch) these events will also be very enjoyable. Yep, go for it and 'happy wobblying'.

I joined a zumba class last year and it's brilliant. There's a fair bit of hip wiggling goes on! I have a problem with my shoulder and although some of the routines make it hurt a bit and I have to avoids certain moves I can do most things. It certainly helps to stretch and move about, and quite often i feel better afterwards.

Talk to the teacher about your problems. The good teachers will keep an eye on you. Mine's brilliant - she's a dancer so has lots of good tips on posture.

It's not often I feel so awful that I have to miss a class. It's a lot of fun. Who would have thought a year ago I'd be able to do the "Gangnam Style" dance now? (Much to my chidlren's horror)!!!

Belly dance will absolutely help relieve back pain as it GENTLY stretches and strengthens core and back muscles needed to support the spine. Check out Shimmy Belly Dance (watch dot shimmy dot tv) episodes 6, 12, 17, 20, 21, 25 which focus of core and back muscles.
